Welding Type of Selection. At steel hull, IE 80 meters long, we can use intermittent type of welding to install stiffeners on a plate. For bulkhead stiffeners, like flat bars, class society allow or recommend to use two kind of welding type; "staggered" or "chained". Question is: ¿ Which one of the above type of weld will cause less permanent flat bar deformation, knowing that a good welding sequence in both cases will be obviously considered ?. Mario

its not the bar but the plate, you can put some prebend in bar and it,ll shrink down coming straight Chain leaves bigger hump on plate but will sand back, chain is easier and neater, good idea is a marker stick with spaces marked?))

Better welding type. Lazeyjack, Many thanks for your technical opinion. Its look like a very reasonable solution to prevent problems. Thanks again, mvd535

What are the sizes of the plate and stiffeners, and are the stiffeners longitudinal or transverse members ?

Type of Welding To MikeJohns, Question is not for a particular case but in general and for any kind of structural type of constructtion, longitudinal and transversal. mvd535

steel is very strong stuff, and welds are generally far bigger in throat, leg and length is building under class supervision ,than needs be for small ships try to keep your welds to a pattern but keep em small, make sure there is enough penetration and welds are good qual If you are SMAW(STICK) TRY GRAB A 3PH or a welder with large open circuit voltage, like a good second hand Hobart Megaflex, , this way you can run lower amps9PARTICULARLY hand with vertical ups without the rod sticking and run low hydrogen, and being dc you can ss weld too. these silly toy welders can be so frustrating at times Better still switch to aluminium ) fast to cut, weld, and clean and best of all light!! for us ole boys
