well you see bags ole boy, i'm designing the structure of a new boat, swainy would not approve, each time I finish a section, I take a peep at your latest blitherings
Now, absoludle I am not confuzzed betwixt threads, in fact I didnot read the fanie **** today.
Now did I say that I believed swainies rabbitting on? nyet, non, no,
privet Bags, I mean wots time there, me start on pc 0530 and always off usually by 5pm, , but now you look a t you, tee hee, your life is here, right , long with the Famous Five

Funny, because you appear to know he wrote some "****" today, and you choose to use this thread as a means to put forh ad hominems. However, I frankly don't care how much time you spent here - you seem to have forgotten quite quickly, that it was you, who made all those ridiculous statemens about being on hrere constantly.

Yup, I do like you, however, I really dislike your actions these last couple of days.

I'd still say you're liar, since you gave the impression that I PM'd you something that would somehow be embarrassing to me, "stuff" that would somehow show me from a "bad" side. I guess one could argue, that it's not a lie, but merely a convenient circumvention of the truth, a rhetorical trick, used to make one's opponent look bad, without actually saying anything.
But then again, I'm just a commoner, a proletarian, and a dane to boot. So I just settled on "liar".

The nearest one to you that I'm aware of is a 26 footer called "Misty Blue" somewhere in Brisbane, which was sailed there from BC a few years back.

I can imagine fewer more foolish comments than to claim that a boat that has endured pounding on lee shores in huge surf for 16 days , a pounding across 300 yards of coral reef in huge swells , a collision with a freighter and a passage thru the NW passage ,etc etc , is "not strong enough."


Colvin estimates the time for a hull and deck construction at 1,000 hours, a job I tack together in 100 hours. My origami 36 has 1/7th the amount of chine cutting , and welding that there is in a Van de Stadt design.

Tanton yachts and Graeme Shanon are both designing in Origami now.

If I were trying to fill my pockets, I'd be charging a lot more that $350 for a set of plans for a 36, or a lot more than $20 for my book. The number of boats built quickly and affordably to my designs

The ********, elitist , "Be reasonable, and do it the hard , expensive , and time consuming way" which has cost far to many people their cruising dreams, has to be challenged , every time it rears it's ugly head.
Challenge it I will. I make no apology for enabling dozens of the not so rich to get off the treadmill and out cruising in reasonable time, without going decades in debt. How much have you done to that effect?
The contempt of elitists is the most sincere compliment you can give me.
I don't believe that having built 3 dozen boats , and having roughly 200 boats built to my designs, as well as having crossed the Pacific 9 times and cruised 11 months a year for 32 years makes me a layman. What have you done that makes you so qualified?

There seems to be a lot of anger on this particular site. It seems that the variety in the boat building world should be a cause for enthusiasm and celebration of new ideas, new creations and encouragement for innovations. Not everyone wishes to drive a Toyota or Ford. What a drab world it would be if there was nothing but Swain 36's,all identical to Mr Swains ideals, or nothing but Dix 43's. Mr. Swain expecially seems to want to ram his ideas down the owner/builders throat. I have built three vessels from good designs, and certainly enjoyed adding my own ideas and experiences of nearly 40 years on the water and hundreds of thousands of miles of offshore and coastal travels in various craft.
I do know of a few people that own Swain's boats. They do seem to be good rugged little craft although not bullet proof as he claims. The one vessel that spent time on a lee shore in large surf actually fell apart eventually , having its keel fall off. There have also been issues with hull cracking under the engine bed area. This is quite possibly due to poor welding and no reflection on design.

Thanks for your post Frank and welcome to the forum.

Yes some people can get frustrated easily trying to express themselves on forums and tempers can lead to some inexcusable behaviour from otherwise quite decent characters. The moderator can be summoned if you feel someone has overstepped the mark and he can edit or delete the particular post.

If you can find anyone with a photograph of the cracking it would be illuminating and I'll tell you what the cause was. I would expect the hull plate to crack adjacent to the internal bed welds. This is not very surprising and is the sort of failure we would predict.

Any photo's of the boat on the beach would be appreciated too.

None of my boats has ever lost it's keel. That is almost the exclusive domain of high aspect keels with short attachement to the hull, something none of my designs has. My 36 fin keeler has an attachement to the hull of 18 inches wide by 12 feet long , continued to the transom by the skeg and keel web. It would be the equivalent of a full length keel falling off.
The only one of my designs that was ever abandoned in the surf, off Baja, was regurgitated by the sand a couple of years after , with the keel still attached. The wooden cabin , which the owner insisted on, was gone, a mistake he hasn't repeated in his current origami steel boat. I have never claimed a that one could leave one of my boats in huge surf , filled with sand, and go to La Paz for several days of drinking and partying and come back to an intact boat.
It is flattering when the only way someone can find a way to argue with what I say is by putting words in my mouth in order to have something to argue against.
When people have been interested other designs, I have always encouraged them to build whatever they want , only use more modern methods, like origami building, and not settle for outdated methods. I have also said that any hard chine hull can be built using origami methods, resulting in a far better boat in a fraction the time.I do suggest that they start their project with full awareness of the facts, like a boat with too much beam has ultimate stability problems and a boat with too wide a stern has control problems downwind, like one can build a fairer and much simpler boat by using more modern methods and that one doessn't have to spend huge amounts of money to have a seaworthy , good looking boat, that frames are a waste of time in boats under 55 feet, and that conic ends are far simpler to build , look better and go thru the water far easier than chined ends.
In the interest of low income cruisers I always challenge pomotion of the naive belief that the most expensive, time consuming way is the only way, or always the better way, for that matter.
For those wanting to build a spray, I have pointed out that one could build several offshore 38's in less time than one spray and have a better boat in the end. I have warned people that Roberts advocates skegs that fall off if they hit anything too hard, a life and death matter that I feel obligated to warn people about.
Telling people of easier and more affordable ways of doing things without paying hommage to the marine industry? What a horrible , unspeakable thing to do!!! Warning people of the pitfalls, and what easier optiions they have . What an unspeakably horrible thing to do!!! Not allowing those with a financial stake in their spending a smuch as possible tell them what they need , unchallenged. Utterly dispicable of me!!!
Peddlers of expensive marine equipment get really pissed off at me for showing people how to build far better gear for a tiny fraction of what they expect to be paid for it. I consider their contempt the sincerest form of flattery.I have similar contempt for elitists.
Are you the Frank who lost his boat beating up the west coast of Baja in 89?
