How to build a steel barge

Hello Everyone.

Does anyone have experience building a steel push barge. I am looking
to build one 28' long by 12' wide by 4 ' deep all steel. This is the same as one I now own. It was built by a fabrication company. It has steel web trusses inside as support. I would like to build without these as they are difficult to find 4' deep. Does anyone have any ideas or places I could find plans for this?

Hi there!
I have just finished a twin hull steel barge , each side pontoon are of size 16m(52'6")x3.2m(10'6")X1.85m(6') and the gap between the two is 2.5m(8'). If you are interested, I can send you the drawings. The hull is as per Classification Soceity (Indian Register of Shipping) rules and can easily take pretty rough (upto 3 to 4' waves) waters.

My current barge is 32' long all steel. It's capacity is 12 tonnes.

I would like to build a push barge 50' by 16' with a capacity of 30 to 40 tonnes.

I would like to see your palns and I am very interested.

Looks like what you want is more or less the same as what I built. Yes, I designed and built it myself. We have a modest shipyard and are currently manufacturing 40-50 ton hull blocks for an Indian Navy ships, which is about 10 km downstream. I use this barge to deliver these blocks. If you can evenly distribute the weight, the sinkage for loading 40 tons is roughly 40 cms.
You can have it towed , or can rig a structure at the back to mount one or two outboard motors.
I used 6mm (1/4th) plate at the bottom , and at the centre part of the deck. Rest are mostly 5mm plates. Each pontoon is divided into 4 compartments.
I am sorry that I can't send you the plans today. Its late evening here and I am already out of the yard. I shall be out of town to New Delhi for 3 days. Expect to send you the General Arrangement plan on tuesday or wednesday.

In Holland we cut down most of out woods long ago for ship and housebuilding. After this we started cutting woods in other countries for building and trade. Do not let this happen in your county, be carefull with your forests!

I am a naval architect and can do the detail design for you to construct at Gabon.
If you are interested, please let me know and I shall send you a detaled questionnaire as to your infrastructure for doing the construction, the environment the barge shall work in, the range, and whether its a dumb (pushed/towed) or propelled and what kind of speed you are looking for.
Once we have these info, we can get onto the matter of fees and the modalities of the work.
Do you have any registration authories there? If so, do they have any set of rules in position?

2. Is it powered?
3. Will it opearate in river water or sea? If in sea, what sea state?
4. Will it need towing?
5. Do u need fenders?

The purpose of the barge is to provide a work platform from which to install seawalls.

looking to construct two 8 foot wide x 4 foot high x 40 feet long sections and pin them together. I will be using 1/4 inch cold rolled A36 steel in 4 foot x 8 fool sections. My concern is the braceing. looking to use 1/4 inch steel angle iron as the structural frame for the sectional barge. My linkbelt machine weights 27000lbs and the oter equipemnt totals 5000 lbs.. barge needs to support weight and be used as a strong work platform.

Option 1 . I have ready drawings for a catamaran barge. It's two pontoons are of size 20m(length) [65' 7"]x2.25 [7' 9.6"]m Breadthx 2m [6' 6.5"] Height

Overall breadth is 10m. The pontoons are connected by 3 interconnection panels and cross bracings both horizontally and vertically.

I have attached a pic alongwith.

If you want this , I have detail structural drawings ready and can send to you. You may pay whatever you feel is right.

Option 2 :You may want me to redesign this to you exact size.That will cost 2000$. Half in adv half on completion.
You can also think of getting it fabricated here. I can ship it to you as deck cargo. I am doing 20 of this for Kuwait.

However, send me the details of your machine and its bolting plan.
