arc strikes

Just wondering what you guys opinions are of them . Are they a major defect ? , how can they affect the parent metal ? , is their a repair procedure ?

Well I hav'nt a clue what you are talking about.

To me an arc strike is when you accidentaly flash your live rod in front of your eyes resulting in arc eye.

As i mentioned on a previous thread the repair for an arc strike is give as:

If you're building a boat to Class, ie using the standard IACS quality method, it is thus:

a) Remove the hardened zone by grinding
b) Weld over a short bead over 50mm on
the arc strike

From IACS no.47 Shipbuilding and Repair Quality Standard, Dec 2004.

Like all things related to fatigue, it is cumulative. One item by itself can often appear very benign, but in the wrong environment, fatigue, can become very problematic.

It also depends upon ones point of view too. Since a small crack to repair whilst not catastrophic and making headline news, does occur, and frequently. These cracks are more of an inconvenience than anything else. But, when the crack is near the waterline, or below it..the minor aspect pales into the huge costs to repair owing to the dry docking that is require for such a small minor crack!

I thought surely someone could see the sarcasm in a thread entitled " arc strikes" giving the on going debate and input from yourselves on this matter in another thread . Perhaps British humour does not travel .

As for procedure not Class, again, vague, why is that..or must i guess since surely someone must know?

If you are building to Class, everything is about correct procedure and QA, your question is about procedure, so that is what the reply is referring to, unless you're reading something into my reply there that is not there. Surely I'm being sarcastic in my reply and don't know about it!.

Ergo, if you do not or are not aware of this formal procedure for 'arc strikes', then you cannot be building steel boats to Class.
