Understood. I'm not a guy who want to hide everything, esp if its nothing got to do with my "core business", and i'm a teacher, what a teacher got to hide? I will answer the best possible to what i know and good at, but at boat design, i think the discussion will hardly based on my expertise, and i dont think i deserve in place of an advisor yet, here.

Anyway, is there a simpler and quick way i can browse newly created threads or unread posts here? So i dont just lurk for info, but i can share as well, to my best knowledge.

well this is a double post, not sure if its allowed, but i'm doing it anyway until got warned. looking back at my CP, there is reputation reminder, this is new to me. last time i got green reputation, but i just got red reputation with comments "this guy is winding us all up ....". so what does it means? negative? cant i just express my opinion? this is what i'm afraid of as a total newbie, talking too much will just reveal my foolishness.

Shafri, last year i built a 26ft, motorhome using a product here avilable in sheet form known as MDF to build female molds to produce large interlocking parts of the body but not the complete unit as a whole. The problem you have to overcome in mold construction male and female is it has to be super smooth (like the paint on your car) well waxed with mould release wax otherwise when you attempt to remove your glassed up hull it will be difficult. In a female mold this results in damage to the gel coat finish. The gel coat is the first coat you apply to the mold and it's colour will be the colour of your boat. The easiest way for a beginner might be to build the female mold in two steps, first build it in regular wood(oversize by the thickness of your finished mold) then sheet over this wood with thin but extremely smooth product( MDF or arbourite). You can fill in your corner joins and imperfections with regular automotive polyested based repair filler and sand down to a 400 grit or better 600 grit. Now for the wax release compound, if you use MDF in your mold do not use the brush on liquid wax release, there is a chemical reaction that will damage your gel coat finish. The best release i have found is still the labour intensive paste type mold release wax. Be patient wax and buff, wax and buff, you can never apply too many layers, In your case as a beginner i'd apply a min. of 10. Your idea to build a smaller boat first is the right way to proceed. Build 3 foot models until you feel comfortable with working with the products then build your dingy as you will need one for your final big boat.Use proper safety precautions not much sense completing your boat and be too sick to use it. Don't be shy to come to the forum to ask questions even if you think they are very simple questions to ask. Regular fiberglass rovings and cloths that are used in non marine use are also used in boat construction. The polyester resin formulae are a little more critical, get the resin formula number from your supplier and check what it is recommended for, usually it will be for both marine and non marine. One very important item is the gel coat, it must be a factory made gel coat not just regular polyester resin with colour added. This is very inferior. One of the biggest challenges today with fiberglass builders is finding a good gel coat. In this part of the world i find Ashland products to be very good, I am sure there are others but it takes time to find and try them. Good luck, read and study, experiment with models or other useful items you might need in life, make the finish on your mold smooth, smooth, smooth, and wax & buff, wax & buff until your arms pain to keep you awake at night. Geo.

Pistnbroke, Had a suspision of such even before i took my valuable time to post a reply that might help him. For a guy that knew next to nothing he seemed to know alot in too short a time in his broken english. Oh well maybe others will benefit.---Geo.

(i havent touch the computer programming yet, let me not into it) isnt enough for my intro on the other thread and here? or you should make a visit to our beautiful place here? so i can show you the way of our sea, to show you where the low ground and high ground here, and what time we cannot use certain route, hehe, i dont know whats its called. islands? many islands! fishing? everybody is fishing here, except me!

if you are talking about me? well, i learnt by googling, i found many wonderfull sites, and forums. i prefer websites more than forums, why? in websites i get informations, in forums i get negative and highly religious people, but i'll keep my faith to the very good folks out there (and here). if you are talking about me knowing alot in too short time, well. i made my homework, rather than keep asking thousands of questions here out of my arse. but giving people advice from what i read alone and have not done? well, i dont think so. i think people can do the same (googling), i'll be reporting in when i did something, and i mean something real, well proven, practically. and should i report the failure as well? my website is www.soasystem.com, but currently its down, unmanaged, dead! due to a mess i'm currently at, i'm bussy in the morning, sit down in front of my computer before i go to bed in the night, thats what i did, daily. Shafri, I also come from a place where we build boats by eye, and many do question my Newfounland english (old irish/english mix) my impression and i shouldn't have taken it was you were some kid using broken english to play with forum members. Like a sub carriers harmonics playing hell with a carrier's frequency so i stand corrected my friend you are for real and as such have every right in our democratic world to research.May i make a suggestion if your goal is to gather maximun info on a boat build as a beginner, present your case in step form as it is the best way for you to learn and for members to present you the info. Study and ask questions on each before advancing as you have gone all the way from resin, fiberglass, moulds, hull design,( lifting strakes and so on) in 4pages of post. Far too fast for a beginner to leard and far too broad a spectrum for members to do justice in advising and expanding on any one aspect of a build. If you are truly a beginner the discussion should still be back in materials and how to work with them. I.E. you read up, ask questions on actual hands on with working with the product. Book info and hands on technique are two vastly different worlds. However if as a teacher your are gathering info for an upcoming instructors job or presentation your approach seems in line with what we call a crash study in the subject. --Geo.

i think i got what i need... "do a small diameter sphere project", and "make a small boat", and "laminate something and you'll learn the next morning". i'm afraid i cannot present every step of what i have in mind. it will take people time replying my post, and it will make controversial and even more "flame" to me. as i already mentioned, i've done fiberglassing for projects (not relating to marine) and small only, so i have a bit of clue of how it works, the strength (poly/csm/mek), delamination problem etc. and its too basic and noob i think, not worth mentioning, as someone said "you'll have to learn/do it yourself, nobody can teach you that"

i have other backgrounds thats not relating to boating (as mentioned), i will frankly and honestly tell you what i'm up to, be it if i want to be a boat instructor or else. but not, i will stay with what i already am. no change at all.

btw. i changed avatar due to some problem on the other forum, people get annoyed with my real "ugly" face, so i changed it, even my name changed to "Mechatrommer" there, that made piston successfully find me. and its 3AM already, my brain cells is freezing, luckily got no work early morning tommorow, will be up late for sure. and errr... lastly, if you happen to see Richard (apex1? steamer?) around, say hi to him for me, say there is a fan want to get his signature. . see ya!

Ok, mon ami, sounds like you got a good handle on things and do have experience in working with GRP more than i thought from the early posts on your thread, thus my concern with you getting a good hands on with it. Certainly you seem to be well on your way to actual construction only having to decide on what system you will use. As such you don't need any further input from me' there are far more experienced guys here more up to date on techniques and latest products. So i bid you adeau and good luck on your build. Geo.

Australian is a neighboor to me. and i like their "dirty" slang/accent. the admin of my favourite blog (eevblog) is an australian, he is hell one of a guy.
