Urethane as a replacement for Gelcoat?

I heard about this recently from a kayak builder on the Kayak Forum. Apparently, his company sprays a urethane autobody paint into a female mould, then uses an epoxy primer "tie-coat" and lays up the composite over top of this, but he didn't know the particulars about the tie-coat.
Anyone heard of the process and what specific products are used?
