It was upon a time two friends, one from Italy and the other one from Spain.

The italian has an idea..to design an innovative hull shape that he named ASD(Arrow System Design) and to test it at high speed..

The spanish was the owner of a small shipyard with a dream...to build the fastest boat of Galicia...and when he seen the plans....he fallen in love.

He had in stock some rolled ss.....the ob engines were bought second hand.

Two dreams realized at the same time....

The boat reached a top speed of 60 knots in Atlantic Ocean

The boat was sold 2 days after...

This is why ss, no question of money but...a question of dreams...

I love that story!! Great Job R.O.

Probably to much romantic.....but how does I forget my first ASD boat?

The emotion to reach 60 knots and to realise a dream...

The reason that fuel tanks are not made of stainless is also the welds. The intense heat of welding changes the chemical composition of the alloy. The area around the welds would be subject to corrosion.

    Another Choice

If aluminum is just too cheap looking for you - go with titanium!
Very corrosion resistant, even salt water, and lots of deep sea robotics are manufactured from the stuff!:D

And its density is in between stainless and aluminum!
    Density of SS = 8 to 7 g/cubic cm
    Density of Ti = 4.5 g/cubic cm
    Density of Al = 2.7 g/cubic cm

Or buy an old Delorean and put it on pontoons!

No, Nes Sledeverksted and Nes Trebåtverksted is not my companies or web sites. You should send an email to the Owner, Mr Egil Kristiansen, mailto:nsledeve@online.no
I know that he doesn't have a clear understanding of copyrights :)
He is building the prototype for the Backman 18, that's our business relation.

What makes me distrust the claim of a monel hull is the bottom paint. Monel won't allow anything to grow on it. However it is notoriously difficult to paint. Why would anyone be crazy or foolish enough to cover a naturally antifouling surface with paint?

Yeah, I hear titanium and platinum don't corrode either! :D

Bigger and bigger boats are made of plastic every year. The cost of a mold will seem cheap compared with purchasing and working so much 'stainless', and there are 'one-off' moldless methods, too.

    Hello,

I read the question regarding building a boat hull from Stainless steel and wondered what you may imagine are the benefits of such? One could coat their boat hull with a Stainless steel product which requires zero heat to apply and so can apply directly to Gelcoat etc. Benefits are touted as being diver proof so as no damage occurs to the hull even with aggressive cleaning measures. The coating provides some additional waterproofing of the hull and is very slick when applied correctly. There is a company about to release this product to market and I would be happy to pass along to them any questions and or comments from this forum.

    Sincerely,

    Terry Gould
