School project

Hi, I'm new to the forums and found this place by looking on the internet for information about so I thought I'd just ask it over here as well.

I'm in college in Belgium and we have an assignment where we have to discuss materials used in a boat and why they are used there and I was wondering if someone here could give me a summary of what materials are used in what boats. Any information is good since I can hardly find anything about it on the internet.

Best would be if I got a design of a boat and then discussed what materials there were used and why.

Thanks in advance

Stay tuned Camowl - you'll be flooded with replies.
There are a wide variety of materials used in boat building. First the hulls: Timber, Steel, Plastic (fibreglass) and even Concrete. More primitive materials included tree bark and animals skins stretched over frames.
Of course there is only one true material - timber....Ignore all those who will now protest....
Fittings can range from bronze, copper, iron and even aluminum. In some cases plastics are used on smaller dinghies. For rope work - hemp, perlon and nylon, and spun wire.
Perhaps you want to be more specific

Ok more specific,

I'm in need of a design, maybe a technical drawing of a boat, which specifies which materials are used in that boat.

What material has the hull and why? (hardness, stiffness, weight,...)
what kind of foam is there to prevent shocks and to isolate it?
....

That's the kind of things I need.

Datasheets from the materials are also useful but not really necesarry since I can find most of them in the library at my school.

Thanks in advance.
