plywood - advantage of greater number of layers?

I notice 3/4" AC plywood for home construction has 3 layers glued together. Ther is also a 5 layer plywood, and I've seen marine plywood have even more layers. What is the advantage to more layers?

¾” (18mm) marine plywood that meets the BS 1088 standard will have 12- 16 layers. This gives the sheet great stability. Each layer is 90 degrees from the next. Good marine ply will also have very few voids and no filler. You get what you pay for.
