MEGA GLOSS Topside Marine Paint

I bought this paint to use on my 2 fiberglass live wells on my pontoon boat. MEGA GLOSS Topside Marine Paint is a technically advanced single component topside polyurethane enamel giving you a hard protective coating for super high gloss, color retention, and long durability.
It says to use Xylene to thin it.
Well I've got expensive paint thinner, lacquer thinner, mineral spirits, some base coat car paint thinner that has a whole lot of chemicals in it including xylene.
So far I've thinned this Mega Gloss paint with lacquer thinner and also the base coat car paint thinner and sprayed (HVLP) it on some primered metal roofing samples i have, let it dry for 2 days in my garage 80 deg, and both samples i can fingernail scratch the paint off the metal but not that easily. Using your finger nail the paint is soft. Why is this paint soft after 2 days of 80deg. drying? Auto zone sells ready to spray Duplicolor paint in quarts. If i can not get this marine topside paint to cooperate i may have to surrender to Duplicolor

Most of the single part marine paints take several weeks or more to harden, and even then they aren't that great, so don't expect too much from them.

I've just tested this minute another thinner with this Mega Gloss paint after drying for 1 day. It's called Dupont Uro-clear Low-temp reducer 10755S. I could not scratch it with my finger nail but could scratch it with a dime using alot of down pressure. It also dried very hard compared to the other test's. I believe i'll use this thinner since i can't locate any Xylene locally. I have not called a real automotive paint store yet. Perhaps i should.....

Hold the press. My wife, who's out and about spending money like it's on sale, just called to tell me Ace Hardware has Xylene quart cans for $8.00. I'll be testing this Mega Gloss with xylene tomorrow........Tom

I have now used Xylene to thin this Mega Gloss paint and the results are good.
Drying time, 1 coat, over primed metal roofing samples was 20 min. for a non tacky touch dry , at 2 hours fully dry did a scratch test with a dime and hardly noticed a scratch at all.......Tom

So are you guys liking that Bluewater marine paint? We have actually just started being a supplier for it. so looking for feedback on anyone that used it so we know what to tell customers when they call asking about it.

Hey Kyle. I just finished using the Blue Water Mega Gloss 1 Part topside paint on two large pontoon boat live wells that sit at the front of the boat. The live wells original finish was dull dirty so only a 100 grit sanding and solvent cleaning was applied before painting. As suggested the paint called for Xylene for thinning and cleaning of equipment. Xylene worked well for thinning. I thinned paint until a steady 4-5 drips came off the paint stick. I used HVLP equipment. Paint was ready for re coat in about an hour and fully dry overnight. Two coats were applied. I suppose the paint is pretty hard as long as one does not drop a pipe wrench on it. I have not seen how this paint looks after exposure to the elements for a period of time but the semi gloss i purchase was a perfect gloss finish for this job.......Tom

Why not just use interlux perfection and roll & tip?

BTW, I sure hope that you're using a really good respirator.

Using a dual stage respirator. I'm an handyman with lots of projects and still working 40hrs. a week and i love to spray paint.
