| Mahogany Alternative for sailing dinghy? Hi Folks, I have fair experience as a woodworker, but none as a boatbuilder. My daughter and I are building a small sailing dinghy. The stitch and glue plans call for mahogany on all non-plywood areas. What is a decent alternative to mahogany? Can I use oak, poplar, spruce, something that won't hit the piggy-bank quite so hard? | There are several woods sold as "phillipine mahogany", they're typically cedars of different flavors, little bit coarser grain, not quite as "buttery" to work with, but decent substitutes, often more rot-resistant than true mahogany. Yokebutt. |
