how much the mixing ratio between fiberglass resin and filler ? how much the mixing ratio between fiberglass resin and filler ? I put 20% of fiberglass and 80% of the filler or contrary and few drops of hardener about 5 milliliters is it true ?

What filler? Hardener/resin = 1/100 = 1%

You have to put as much filler as necessary to obtain as dense mixture as necessary. There's really no precise rule, it depends on the intended use.

what is the difference if I make it dense or light ? and I want it Moderate what the exact ratio to make it Moderate because I heard if I didn't balanced it with the time will be cracked

What is the filler material? Microballoons, microspheres, fumed silica, milled fiber, chopped strands, ...? Where and what are you using it for?

Yaasaay, this is what you should do - watch these video-tutorials for West System epoxy products: Hardeners intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UqGj...eature=related Use of fillers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRCiU...eature=related Bonding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUglZwwu2CA&NR=1 Fairing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xE8aUP4rbkw&NR=1 Applying fabrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDI9u...eature=related Barrier coating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JERSc...eature=related Fastener bonding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g40Q7...eature=related Also, check out all the videos in the Boat Builder Central channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/boatbuildercentral You'll find most of the answers there. The rest will come with time and experience. Cheers

A few drops of hardener? are you talking about polyester or epoxy resin?

what is the polyester and epoxy resin? what is the difference ?

Polyester resin is a much cheaper resin with quite different properties from epoxy. epoxy is normally mixed with a hardener in a 1:1 up to 5:1 ratio of resin to hardener. Polyester is catalyzed with MEK-P with a ratio of a few drops to an ounce or 30 mils or greater. Polyester is generally considered inferior to epoxy as it is less water resistant and does not bond to other substances or even itself nearly as well as epoxy does. Generally an epoxy bond is stronger than the substrate or is at least equal in strength. Polyester certainly doesn't make a thickened mixture you would want to put on a decent boat. Many people make the mistake of thinking that car body putty or Bondo is good to use in a boat but it will absorb moisture in the air and any water it comes into contact with and will fail eventually. There are and have been exceptions but they are few and far between.

They are two different types of resins. The difference is in preparation, application, mechanical properties, shrinkage properties, water absorption properties, bonding quality and the cost. Epoxy is generally better in all of the above except that it costs more than poly. But Yaasaay, let me say that I believe that first you have to do some homework by yourself. Buy a book or two about boatbuilding, for example. Nearly every book covers the difference between various types of resins. You can find plenty of info in internet too - though it is much more scattered, so books are better. And please learn to use Google. You'll find out that there's a world of knowledge out there just waiting to be discovered. Here are some quick search results, for example: http://www.westsystem.com/ss/west-sy...rglass-repair/ http://www.fibreglast.com/product/LC_003 http://www.boatbanter.com/showthread.php?t=85213 http://www.westsystem.com/ss/polyester-over-epoxy/ Also, check this free e-book about boatbuilding from FAO: http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/003/T0530E/T0530E00.HTM Cheers Last edited by daiquiri : 06-19-2011 at 01:44 AM.

| At the start of the thread you say 20% fiberglass and 80% filler. They are both solid and need some binder-resin- of some type.
