High Temperature Moulds

    In the current issue of PB 136 Apl-May, there is a second article on high-temp moulds and boat building. In it is a chart that compares the coefficient of expansion of e-glass to carbon etc. and suggest that due to possibility of pre-release, moulds should be made of carbon too, and the fibres not run the length of the mould (ie. short overlapping stacks), to keep the change in dimension of the mould to a minimum.

    Well most mould making already uses CSM, and using csm only, 4 layers at a time, is a good way to go.

    Would not the thermal expansion of mould be all due to the resin in this case?

    Different expansion is something to keep in mind. I've build a carbody prototype (prepreg CF) out of polyester moulds. We had some problems with release every now and then...

    For production moulds we switched to carbon/epoxy, with a surface coat of the same epoxy(SR1660, Tg 150 degrees c)
