About bamboo... I know that certain Japanese paint brushes are made by burying bamboo sections, future bristle end down, in the ground for a year or so. Bacterial action strips away the softer material, leaving the fibers behind. That would be a very economical way of releasing bamboo fibers for test or production. Also, bamboo stalks contains a lot (relatively) of silicon, as do rice plants. Perhaps the silicon, in conjunction with the fibers, would provide more rigidity, and therefore, a stiffer composite?
