Epoxy exposure since 1968

Hi this is Russ,
I first experienced working with Epoxy creating molds for aircraft parts in about 1968 at Piper Aircraft in Vero Beach building the first Cherokees. Then later worked as a Tech man for Ren Plastics (Ciba ) Epoxy Tooling materials. I can report first hand that some people are VERY sensitive to the hardeners in particular. I remember one fellow at Piper that was so sensitive that his hands looked like he had been in a fire. All the skin had blistered off and for months he wore white cotten gloves just to be semi normal. The key is that you must be VERY aware of the possibility you are sensitive. Several men I know could not even walk into a room with an open container without getting red blotches on their arms or face. I happen to NOT be sensitive. I have been around it and worked sometimes barehanded without a severe breakout.
In simplified terms here is what I believe happens. The body will tolerate a certain level of absorption of the Amines Etc. When that point is reached the body rejects to any additional absorption and the reaction takes place. Much the same as getting drunk except that your "limit" is retained for a VERY long time and any exposure of fumes or dust will "BITE" you.
Hope this helps. Russ
