Do I need to use tape on the joints of a mirror?

Hi all, I am a complete novice when it comes to sailing. I have recently been given a plywood hulled mirror, that has sadly been neglected. I have had conflicting information as regards the repair of this craft. I was firstly told to remove the fibre glass tape from the outer joints and replace the gaps using window putty (can I do this ?) then I was told that I need the tape on for strength. Now I cannot find a place to buy said tape can anyone advise me ?, also can I use normal exterior gloss paint to paint it ?. I also need to repair a small hole in the side could someone advice me on the best method of doing this thanks.

The fiberglass tape is structural. Window putty is for windows. If the tape is fine, leave it alone. How big of a hole is it?

the hole is only about 3mm across but about 200mm long. and unfortunately the tape has had to be taken off due to the fact that water had managed to seep underneath it in places. Thanx for the reply .

Gonzo's correct, the tape provides a tremendous amount of strength to the joint. This construction method (taped seam or stitch and glue) relies on the properties found when cloth is set in epoxy.

If it has to come out, grind it out and make a traditional 'glass repair. Remember to put the tape back. The repair can be done a few different ways, the quickest would be to cut away the damage, grind a wide taper to the newly cleaned wood and fill with thickened epoxy, then fair 'till smooth and paint.
