Costing for the shell

Hi guys, I;ve been given 2 quotes for the materials for a 43 footer yacht.

DOUBLE HULL SKIN

Outer Hull
Gelcoat 4-6 mm
Chopped strand layer 3 mm
one layer of 10oz fiberglass
two layers of 25oz fiberglass
Airex core
two layers of 25 oz fiberglass

Inner Hull
Gelcoat 3 mm
Chopped strand layer 2 mm
one layer of 10oz fiberglass
two layers of 25oz fiberglass

After fitting Inner hull to outer, Inject expanding foam to 2mm void.

One at £5,708. and the other £11,270. That is for all materials needed. My dialema is why the big difference, the gel, and resins are to Lloyds standards so is it the cloth and tapes ?

Both layups, sound a bit light for a 43 footer.

Material costs

Material costs sound in the range for regular fiberglass, no exotics. Big question.... vinylester or epoxy resin and does this include deck attachment or stringers???

I am currently getting costs on a 38 foot layup. hull/deck/stringers.

big cost changes are in resin, glass schedule/type and technique (bagged, scrimp or cold).... is there only biaxial or one of those triax, any reinforcement, ect.....

If one estimate is 1/2 the other, or twice the other, whichever way you look at it, you need some more quotes.

Is the estimate for the same quantity and the same quality of materials?

Did you give them a list of x amount of fabric and x amount of resin, or did you give them the plans and let them figure it out?

Where did you get the layup schedule from?

Have a third offer and / or try to figure it out here:

http://www.r-g.de/
go "English" then e-shop....

You even find a basic layup calculator there "Lamicens" it is in German but easy to understand.

And I concur with Itchy, the layup sounds a bit light.

Regards
Richard

You already gave the schedule, sort of, so it wouldn't hurt to put the (or some) quantities and prices quoted so others could comment on the price. You don't need to get any more specific on the schedule.
