3m 5200

Greetings...Does anyone have info regarding the the strength of 5200 used in a semi ridgid joint? The final product must be water tight. Part "A" will be painted metal, part "B" will be GRP or epoxy if needed. The painted surface can be stripped to bare metal if required. Also, should the joint be backed up with rivets? Thanks

All I have is the stock peel and shear strength tables from a scanned 3M data sheet but you probably already have that...

This may not be the most scientific data, but a metal fitting bedded in 5200 will ripp gelcoat and part of the frp laminate before letting go.

Should the bond be bare metal to GRP or is a painted surface adequate?

A bond to a painted surface is only as good as the bond betweent the paint and the substrate.

PL Premium Polyurethane

You (all) should try PL Premium Polyurethane construction adhesive. About 95% of the performance of 5200 but about 20% the cost.

As a sidenote, this stuff is great to stick stuff in place, fast, to be coated, glassed, or mechanically fastened for maximum holding power. It is too cheap, though.

I was going to use 5200 to bond my washboards to the hull and SS screws to hold. This is what some boat manufacturers use here and the 5200 is tough stuff.... will the alternate mentioned here work in this application as well ?

Thanks, Jim
