Having given this more thought on my walk ,I do remember removing a device from a Hamilton 212 I think it was. some years ago This was not linked to the throttle just the bucket ,and it would lock it in any position .regardless of throttle position ,I was asked to remove it because the owner said it often jammed and he was worried it would cause an accident. I have never seen another one.

With a gearbox ,if your motor takes it's cooling water from the jet ,you may have to consider mounting and driving a separate raw water pump ,good luck with your project.

You could drop the buckets on this boat at speed and bury the bow anchor which was something for 62 feet (20m) and 60 tons. You'd be stopped in about two boat lengths.

I think I get it now: 360's while docking is like a dog that turns around a few times before laying down.

It's called a de-tent. You can adjust how much tension it applies but it was designed more so that the thrust from the nozzle doesn't kick the bucket back into the 'up' position. It is very hard to pull the bucket into the jetstream at full throttle anyway, you do need to back off a ways while the bucket is applied then mash it again.

the de-tent is the box looking thing on a shaft. American Turbine also utilise a similar system for their HTRII reverse system

With 360 turning I was referring to the amazing slow speed maneuverability I get from my Hamilton hj212. I can get up in a narrow channel and do quick 180 by manipulating the reverse bucket and throttle. Also coming into the river dock, even in heavy current, can “walk” the boat sideways. Now I do enjoy the high speed spins and bow diving stops too.

I seem to remember that when reversing a jet you would turn the steering wheel the opposite direction to what you would normally.

You may wish to custom adapt a different type of bucket that doesn't pivot as part of the nozzle. While this will work for an 'adequite' reverse, it won't enable the type of manouvers described prior.

Good morning Frosty ,see my post No 13 ,ericrunner also concur weth speedboats ,this type of bucket will be more complicated to mount, and will only work if you attach it to the nozzle. The more common bucket will work mounted on the jet bodies or the transoms. As for manouvres, they will be very restricted with your setup anyway. But if you do manage anything spectacular make sure you video it !!

Correct there old timer. It's a very hard habit to break when you make your "flare" on final to the dock NOT to spin the wheel to opposite lock and go to reverse. Instead, you simply leave the wheel right where it is, hit reverse and it's a thing of beauty.

Of course, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing!

just think in the mode of; "which side of the boat do I need my thrust?" and all will be fine, or if that's difficult then the bow will always go in the direction you turn the wheel...
