Velvet Drive possible dumb question The drive I got is model number 10 17 004 with a 1.1 ratio, serial number 13555 Does it work equaly well in forward or reverse. Or is there a way to change it to spin the prop in a diff direction? I just overhauled the motor, a 351 ford it is r/h rotaion, not sure what that means, is it right hand rotation standing in front and looking back or standing in back and looking forward. Standing behind the boat and looking at the prop it turns to the right. We checked the tranny when we had it off the motor with a 1/2 inch drill adapter and connected it to the spline shaft and had to spin it left, but when we put it in forward gear the output shaft to the prop spun the correct way and that got me to wondering... so you can see my question, which way does a r/h rotation turn and from where am I looking at it?

| A standard rotation engine goes counterclockwise looking at the flywheel. Those transmissions can be set to either rotation engines. The instructions are cast in the front by the pump. They are not made to run in reverse continually.

I am so confused I have looked at the links and am really confused My engine turns clockwise or r/h when standing in front of the motor looking back at it. When I look at the transmission face (the part that slips into the engine) the word top is at the top which direction should the arrow point, to the left or to the right, my prop is a right hand turning prop when standing at the back of the boat looking at the prop.

Looking at the Front of the Motor - the motor turns Clockwise. When standing behind the motor looking at the output of the motor/trans it turns Counter - Clockwise. It is a Left Hand Rotation and you should be using a Left Hand Prop.

I have two props with this boat and they are both r/h props, Can the tranny be made to turn the other way?

Velvet Drive transmissions Only turn the same direction as the motor [while in forward gear] If you try to get forward motion with an opposite hand prop by running in reverse, your Transmission will be Very Short lived - Reverse gear is designed only for short, low speed operation. Perhaps your motor is a RH [clockwise] rotation as viewed from the output end [ flywheel and transmission ]. These are not common, but are used in Dual Motor installations

Here is my Problem, this will be long got the boat, a 1980 Penn yan with a seized motor, the tag on the motor said it was a pcm ford 351 motor and researching the model number on the tag it was a r/h motor. Sent the motor out to be rebuilt It was rebuilt as a r/h motor reassembling the finished motor the Distributer would not go back in. Took motor back to shop, they thought they put the wrong cam in it Turns out it was a l/h motor with a r/h tag on the manifold We just changed the gear on the distributer shaft and now I have r/h motor The tranny is apparently indexed for a l/h motor, and my props are both r/h props one prop is a spare. Further research from the PO said he bought it a few years ago as a non runner needing a starter and bought a new starter for it but it would never start. why, he unknowingly bought a r/h turning starter and put it on a l/h turning motor. He could never get it to start so it sat in his yard a few years until I came along. He said he bought it from a guy that stated the motor was changed out a few years before he sold the boat, appartenly a l/h turning motor was put in the boat and the tranny and props were all for a L/h Motor My understanding now is that the tranny will turn the forward gear and prop only in the same direction as the motor rotation I am too far into this to quit now, what do I have to do? I think I have to re-index the tranny for r/h rotation motor and get a l/h turning prop that will turn in the same direction as the motor and push the boat forward when the tranny is in forward.

quote:" I think I have to re-index the tranny for r/h rotation motor and get a l/h turning prop that will turn in the same direction as the motor and push the boat forward when the tranny is in forward." If you mean indexing for r/h rotation Imput to the Trans - yes, that is correct

Sooooo all I have to do is remove the tranny from the engine take out the four bolts loosen then move or rotate the front plate of the tranny until the other word "TOP" and the arrow with it points to the right put the bolts back in and reinstall tranny whats the worse thing that can happen when I do this? What kind of seal is in there?

Correct, at top of trans, word, "TOP" with arrow pointing to the Right - I believe there's a thin paper like gasget. Shouldn't be a problem

| If you are in Miami FL, call BAM Marine.. BAM Marine of Florida Inc. 315 SW 15 Ave Pompano Beach FL, 33069 Phone 954 545 8681 Marc builds these on a daily basis so he can tell you exactly what has to be done to accommodate the input rotation.

I called Marc at Bam Marine he told me a few things I did not know. Standard rotation on a marine engine as viewed from the rear or prop is R/H Standard rotation on an Auto engine as viewed from the front is R/H So right hand rotation engine means different things A marine engine normally rotates in the opposite direction as a car engine Everything was correct on my engine except the rebuild shop installed a right hand Cam which made it a left hand marine engine.. The rebuild shop asked me when I brought it in what the rotation was and I told them it was a r/h engine which was on the Data plate on the intake manifold. Since when I bought the boat the engine was seized I had no idea which way it turned. A combination of errors and a faulure to communicate Back to my tranny Marc said that plate with the words top and little arrows will not come out, it is the hyd pump and will just turn, I should remove the 4 bolts and knock it loose with a big Brass drift, which I have, and turn it 180 degrees until the other word top is at the top with the arrow pointing to the right and he reminded me I will have to get a left hand prop now. This was the first time anyone told me a marine engine normally rotates in the opposite direction as a car engine.

Bilito, Take a look at: http://www.perfprotech.com/store/art...epowering.aspx What you've been told was True 40 years ago, but is no longer True
