Transmission Alignment

Hello

I have a 1973 F31 Trojan with a Chrysler 318 and a Borg Warner 71c transmission.

I had to remove and replace my xsmn. During the removal I had pushed the drive shaft back to get it out of the way. When I tried to bolt the drive shaft flange and the xsmn flange together it leaks. There is a constant stream of water coming out.
When I pushed the drive shaft back by about 3/4" it stopped.

Can I use a spacer to accomadate the difference.

Also the xsmn nows spins constantly. Have I not aligned the xsmn properly. It just slipped right in

Any help will be appreciated

You either need to tighten the stuffing box or change the packing

Xsmn = Transmission. I feel like the shaft must be worn at the packing.

It's likely the packing just needs to be renewed or a little turn on the gland nut is necessary.

Then why does it seal when it gets to the larger diameter that is, I presume, not worn? Put it back in place and re-tighten, if you will, but be aware that the shaft is worn there.

The shaft is worn, but again, if the packing is renewed . . .

As usual you're right frosty, the all knowing all seeing God of boating and everything else. I work on helicopters for a living and for the purpose of brevity, we type in xsmn on the work order. We all know what it means, and it works for us. Sorry if you feel that it makes just about every Helicopter mech in the US Marine Corps a dummy.....
