Penn Yan transmission

Hi all, newbie here
Just got a 1980 penn yan explorer with a 351 and it has what I think is a velvet drive tranny.

Two questions, well three actually
How can I ID the tranny?
I can turn the prop by hand if it is in any gear is that supposed to happen?
I see there are what appears to be some water lines running to the tranny I assume they are to cool it down???

The motor is bad and we plan to overhaul it so I have never seen it run, just want to know what is what

There should be an ID plate with the model and reduction ratio riveted to it. On that engine you most likely have a 71. The clutches are hydraulic so there is little friction when the engine is not running-they are disengaged. There are water lines in the back to cool it. A rebuild kit is less than $180.00. If you have everything out, might as well put new clutches and seals.

Thanks for the tranny info, where on the tranny should I find that ID plate? I am pretty handy is that rebuild a DIY deal?
Not 100% sure if we have to pull the motor yet, going one step at a time.

It is fairly simple to rebuilt. You need a press to take one bearing out. It is worth getting the manual to see the specs. Because the clutches are hydraulic, they self adjust for wear, so the settings are not too critical.

How do you check it once I get the motor going to see if needs a rebuild or not. The oil looks clean and does not smell

It shouldn't slip but engage rapidly and you can check the oil pressure at one of the taps on the top.

What to do

I have the motor and tranny out and sitting on a dolly. I plan to send the motor out to be rebuilt. What should I look at on the tranny. What can go wrong with it??

the tranny is attached to a bell housing, do I take the tranny off the bell housing? will anything fall off doing that?

The bell housing is an adaptor to be able to bolt it to the engine. Get the manual and it will be easier to understand the transmission.

The line that goes to the bottom has to be disconnected. There should be a screen with a spring there too

broke the hose removing it

Cooler hoses have been on a long time and one rusted end fitting broke in removal. How much pressure is in those lines???? I am thinking to get a pair of braided metal flex hoses.
