There is no "best" engine brand on earth. And there are many many other well known names in the marine market at least as good as Cat, in some cases and models better. MTU, John Deere, Yanmar, MAN, Detroit Diesel, Deutz, Cummins, Mitsubishi, Lugger, Iveco, Volvo, Perkins to mention just a few. Regards Richard

One thing to research is WHO actually made the engine , and what was it made for? Loads of marine engines are simple marinizations of industrial or auto engines. The ex industrial engines will usually have 4 or so ratings , giving the power level you can expect with reliability over time. The ex auto conversions seldom give any rating other than "pleasure" a VERY VERY LIMITED TIME AT FULL POWER AND ALMOST ALL THE TIME AT 50% OR LESS. For the boat you contemplate getting an engine for , there should be a match. For a water skier the 450HP Yannmar (BMW conversion) would be far better than a Detroit Series 60 . For a trawler , the Series 60 would be the choice not the BMW. Seems simple , but most marinization shops try to fudge the facts. FF

The different makers have each some of their engines which are 'worth their weight in gold' and a few that are better used as anchors. Cat has some very good ones to be sure. This topic would be a good one fore a new thread, or even several threads, divided by output: Which diesel engine is best in the XX to XX HP/kW range? Jimbo

Which diesel engine is best in the XX to XX HP/kW range? Define "BEST". Low initial cost , low fuel use, low maint requirements , east maint, light, quiet , accelerates quickly ,small , heavy duty , long service life, and dies very slowly are only a few "bests". FF
