Can a cracked v-drive case be repaired?

I'm getting an engine, velvet drive, and Walter v-drive from a guy. One of the two he has, the one I didn't need anyways, has a nice long crack in the top front portion of the case (input side) from right to left as you look at it, about 4' long. I don't know what caused it to crack, but I'm sure it wasn't freezing (in So California) so I'll have to investigate.

So long story short- can the case be welded and have a suitable and seaworthy repair?
