In Alberta licensing as an Oilfield Wellsite Power Engineer requires an unverified affidavit that you have at least 6 months experience with power equipment, pass a 25 point multiple choice exam and pay $25.00 for registration. They didn't change the exam for 25 years so many oil companies used to give people the answers to the test and told them to discreetly write them on their arms before taking the tests.Administrators of test facilities didn't generally verify that you didn't cheat. I'm not inclined to cheat so I chose the legitimate path of 8 days higher education at the Petroleum Institute Training School in Nisku Alberta. As an added bonus for the roughly $1,000 I paid they even threw in a few extra courses and certificates during those eight days.

During my years in the oil industry I picked up a lot of impressive looking certificates. My favorite in house instructor at a major multi billion dollar refinery ( Sclair II Project , Joffre , Alberta ) began the course by saying, You must remain in the room for the next 2 hours. There will be a simple exam at the end of the course. All of the answers are yes. Be sure not to confuse the yes boxes with the no boxes. The single most important thing here is that you must properly complete the affidavit of attendance and acknowledgment of liability at the bottom of the exam. Those of you that have difficulty reading and writing can remain and I will help you complete the exam and affidavit after completion of instruction. I know a lot of you men are in need of some rest after working long hours at other sites before coming here for the course. Those of you that wish to, may now go to sleep at your desks . I will wake you up after completion of instruction.

My favorite credentialed Oilfield Experts are those in the Environmental realms.Their gold trimmed certificates cost a lot more than mine and require much less class time. Those certificates look awesome hanging on office walls and as features of in house documentary productions.

I've had a lot of radical thoughts on the subject of attempting to capture greater energy than drag from wake- wave activity during the last 24 hours. Intellectual and emotional atrophy combined with the fear of the unknown but knowable, are major barriers to people with different belief systems combining their energies to achieve a goal.

In light of greater resistance than sympathy towards the goal I thought it might be useful to review the currently popular concepts regarding the three dimensional nature of time and its impact upon what we regard as finite action- reaction relationships upon our narrow timeline.

Although I find wiki to be as credible for scientific research as Monty Pythons Flying Circus,I did enjoy their space time article. I was pleased to see that it was written in English instead of the gobble dee goop nonsense that many physicists use as they drive each other insane.

I also found a meaningful personal warning within their "spacetime in general relativity" section of the article,

" Many spacetime continua have physical interpretations which most physicists would consider bizarre and unsettling."

Now I am considering the consequences of public discussion of this quest. In light of my experience in past demonstrations that under some circumstances 1 +1 =3 ( 1.4 + 1.4 = 2.8 , rounded to the nearest whole numbers 1+1 =3 ), I am feeling guilty about the emotional stress this topic may be causing to the fragile mind. I have seen physicists and mathematicians teeter on the verge of total intellectual and emotional collapse over the viability of the 1+1 =3 equation.

Although I am grieved by the potential stress the quest may unleash within the fragile mind that is imprisoned by concepts of certainty where certainty does not exist, I feel the quest must continue.

ooo ooo..I changed my mind. I think that you should build and test the above concept before you build and test your wave energy harvesting machine.:D :p

    Questor,

You seem to be well off topic on your own thread. Probably off forum.

Given your inquiring mind, I am surprised you are involving yourself in something as trivial as relativity, when quantum mechanics would be more suitable to your abilities.

Unfortunately I don't think I have experienced a pure thread that has produced valuable and meaningful insights and results.Despite my best efforts to keep a thread on topic I am worse than the most malicious of trolls for destroying my own threads by introducing anecdotal elements to support my objectives. In pursuing the original question I have four primary objectives. The first is to address the real viability of the original question. The second is to assist victims of intellectual imprisonment to escape their captivity to outdated and or erroneous assumptions so that they are better able to apply themselves to creative pursuit. The third is to enjoy myself and the company of others. The fourth is to learn what I can from all the chaotic clutter that arises as a result of pursuing the first three objectives. In many threads the most valuable insights are derived from the off topic ramblings of anarchistic trolls.

I was going to address the essential , interdependant roles of anecdotal, empirical and simple mathematics here but I'll leave that out for now.

Given that I only have $4.00 in the bank to apply to developing my proposed wave energy manipulation technology I am now going to retreat to my washroom laboratory.I will be experimenting with a crudely formed aluminum wing that will be subjected to a variety of flow influences from the shower head.

Is this some kind of new radical terrorist group looking to free those intellectually imprisoned.

I vote that Apex should be freed first...

    No please,

    let me be fenced in!

The fence is not too high anyway due to my low level of intellect.:p

As if it wasn't bad enough having to resort to the bathtub as a research facility. Now I have to contend with the demands to share the research facility.Other residents of the house have insisted that they can't delay their frivolous bathing rituals for a mere evening in the name of science, so it looks like I'm now banned from my own laboratory for the remainder of the evening.

The first stage of experimentation is now complete despite the incessant interruptions and ensuing air quality issues.

As anticipated my wave energy manipulating wing does appear to generate more lift energy than resistance towards the original source of the flow energy which in this case is the shower hose.

Stress issues were encountered that would threaten the integrity of a hull if these wings were installed on a real boat. Any one attempting to duplicate future trials with a real boat is advised to purchase personal flotation jackets for all persons aboard their research vessel as well as personal, group and public liability and life insurance. In addition there is a real risk of destroying the test boat depending upon its hull strength.

When the wing is subjected to a pressurized flow of water at a 90 degree angle, three forces can be felt acting upon the fixed mounting plate attached to the wing for these trials. They are;1 a force that pulls the bottom of the plate away from the holding hand. 2 A lifting force that raises the hand and wing. And 3 a pressing force that pushes the top of the hand backwards. This trial indicates that more energy may be applied to tearing a hull than lifting it.

In the second trial force was applied to the wing at compound angles of 30 degrees from the side and bottom. In addition to the forces described above two new forces were encountered. They were: 1 a force that pulled the front of the plate away from the hand that held it and 2 a force pushing into the hand from the back of the mounting plate.

These trials indicate that the majority of forces acting upon the wings and their mounting brackets would be applied to undesirable tearing action on the hull of any boat they were attached to.

Despite these discouraging results attempts are being made to secure better access to my research facility tomorrow. Issues of air quality are a major concern.

Tomorrow attempts will be made to maintain control of my principal research vessel in the bathtub, with 4 inches of water in the bottom. The research vessel is a motorized catamaran style race boat acquired from a local dollar store. It was leftover from a previous design research project. Two strings will be attached to opposites sides of the rear of the boat. The opposite ends of the two strings will be attached to seperate bricks which will then be placed in opposite corners at the back of the tub. If all goes well, the research vessel will maintain stability in the tub while providing stable wave actions that will guide in determining where to attach scaled down versions of my proposed wave energy harvesting wings.

I hope you guys understand that when Questor calls himself an engineer, he's indulging in a little sleight of hand. He's an engineer in the same sense I am: he's the guy who keeps the engines running.

I'm called a station operations specialist, in these days of fancy titles for mundane occupations. And before they took my helper off shift, he was known as a station assistant.

But when this compressor station first opened, the operators and helpers were known as engineers and oilers - as though they were in the engine room of a ship.

I think I've made it pretty clear what a Wellsite Power Engineer is. In one earlier post I clarified what the educational requirements for licensing were and in a few others I clarified the nature of the work performed by Wellsite Power Engineers. On a weekly basis, I have been the highest paid person on some very big budget wellsite development operations. Vocational opportunity is not a product of licensing. It is a product of site demands, risks and skills. The greater your life skills, knowledge and intuitive abilities are the greater the rewards and the opportunities will be.

The word Engineer is an abbreviation of the term Engine Operator. The abbreviated term was originally applied to the creators and operators of steam engines. In the beginning, creators and operators were the same person due to the costs and risks associated with operation. In the era of steam, Operating Engineers, as a vocation, were the people most respected by the working masses because of the work performed by steam engines. The steam engines relieved workers of many physically demanding and potentially life threatening work duties.Investors also had high esteem for Steam Engine Operators because of the profit potential of their operations.

During that era many other vocations became envious of the respect granted to Operating Engineers so in the interest of generating greater respect for their vocations they began incorporating the word Engineer into their professional titles.

If anyone has misappropriated the use of the term engineer it is the non operating designers that have applied it to themselves.

That is how the history of the word engineer is taught within Power Engineering Institutions. Other professional groups have revisionist histories of their own.

In compliance with the requests of prior respondants to this thread I am disclosing the dismal results of my latest experiment. This time I failed a dummy test of my own making.

Being a little restless and sleepless this evening I decided to perform a test of my research vessel in the western in house research facility otherwise known as the kitchen sink. The object of the experiment was to determine if the captive research vessel could generate stable wave-wake reactions that would be useful in either the study of wave-wake behavior and or assist in determining the proper point for installation of wave energy manipulating wings. The method of performing the experiment was to hold the boat in the water with the motor running. The experiment produced a stable motor wake that might be useful for study of engine wake within catamaran hull styles but it did not produce hull waves. Despite the stupidity of attempting to study hull wave actions generated by a stationary boat I did enjoy the study and its results after overcoming the initial shock.I have always found all manner of small wave study to be awe inspiring.

The next experiment will involve an 18 inch remote controlled scale model boat that is similar to a Sea Ray Sundancer. The experiment will be performed in an outdoor pond. The objectives of this experiment are to determine if the boat will generate wave-wake reactions that are suitable for study and to determine whether or not I have sufficient visual acuity to adequately observe the reactions. I had considered recording the experiment but I doubt that I have the skills to manage both the boat and the camera at the same time.

If all goes well with this experiment then I will attach wave energy manipulating wings to the craft and compare the boats operating characteristics and wave-wake reactions to the results of the first experiment.

There is a major obstacle to performing these experiments in the near future. The obstacle is that I haven't been able to locate the boat in question or any other scale model remote control boat I own. I assume that the boats are at my rural residence and I don't anticipate that I will be going there for at least several days.

That's why I said a 'little' sleight of hand. Because although you've explained what sort of engineer you are, you also keep mentioning that you're an engineer, as though it gives you some sort of insight into energy research.
