We used A pentium 2 200 mhz for years with no prob :-)( well, very few problems) Seriously tho, I have a pent. 4 1.4 gig with 256 megs of ram, and a 40 gig hard drive. And it has been way more than enough for all my stuff. And I have Games, Music ,video Etc. on there as well as 3 different cad programs with thousands of drawings stored. I am right now just over half full on my hard drive and I have never had a performance problem. I would be pretty impressed if you could spend more than say $750 and still be underpowered in any way. Of course whatever you buy, its outdated as soon as you leave the store so shoot for the moon if you got the funds.
Peace, Joey

Don't rely on computer only for boat design. Years ago I did that with 286... Design is not computer graphics only, design is fine art combined with precise engineering... Try with general purpose office computer first, after requirements can be cleared.

Since one year I'm using a Dell mobile workstation precision M90 with core 2 cpu at 2.33GHz, 4GB ram, Nvidia Quadro FX 3500 graphics card. This system is enough for all my work NX, SE, Rhino, Maxsurf, Autoship, Mastership, Office etc.
