| twincam 1400cc car motor inboard Hi,all. im thinking of installing a 1400cc twincam +-70kw fourstroke motor in a rubber duck,the reason for this motor,i can get this motor brand new complete with starter altenator and carb for very cheap,i have read all the treads on marinizing and going to do most of them,i want to install the motor underneath my sit down console with lots of breathing holes in the sides,to keep my legs warm (ha ha) and to be safe (explotions in closed spaces) almoast like a bike,now the question what drive should i use???? i was thinking a direct drive through hull but spinning the mill at 5000 rpm should i go for a small prop or rather n normal prop for say 80hp with the suitable gearbox which ratio i do not know??? any help thanx |

| Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. You would have to fabricate your own water cooled exhaust manifolds, and likely an adapter for a transmission to mate with your engine. The ignition system may need modifying. On older engines, vacuum advance isn't used , and that may be another issue for you to deal with if yours is all electronic. Also a raw water pump to feed your cooling system ,etc,etc etc..... |

| Hi Pila,yea u got that right mutch work have to be done and i need as mutch info as posible,im running a similar tread on the inboard side of the forms if u want to check it out,im not going for a transmission rather a prop that can give me the most trust for my motor,cooling im still pondering a radiator believe it or not but a centre console of a rubber duck has got lots of space.the manifolds are going to be wrapped in fire prove material,and the motor will have a natural air flow,what do u think regards Kobus |

| Wrapping the manifolds is not a good idea Kobus. It's clear that you don't want your ass burned, but by wrapping the manifolds you don't give them a chance to get rid of the heat, so you are going to rig up your brand new engine for a very quick meltdown. Without the gearbox you can only go in one direction, except with a jet drive. |

| Good point,thx cdk.it can not be that difficult to manufacture a water cooled manifold,thinking in the lines of using the original manifolds any ideas??as for the drive i've got a jet drive in the garage its from a sea doo 110hp but those 2 stroke motors are hi reving and i want to use my motor at 4800rpm??some more ideas?? can i manufacture a 1-2 gearbox?thx again |

| Kobus, google "Ramphos USA" and you will get an UL aircraft web-site - one of the engines offered is the Mercedes smart diesel which weighs in at around 70kg and produces with 'Dragon' rechipping around 112 hp and 255NM of torque from the 1500cc DIESEL engine...

| The effort and technology, not to mention the machining, to build a gearbox to run at those speeds would take a lot of your time for sure. To mate a marine gear to your engine would be easier, like an adapter for the bell housing, and a mating coupler to your flywheel etc. Of course if this to be a jet type boat, that's a whole different situation. |

| Come on Pila, back in the 60's and 70's doing transplants was the way to hot up your car. I have seen several beetles with midship Jag engines, and lots of other variants - there is even some "commercial" stuff like the sunbeam alpine which became the sunbeam tiger by going from 4 cyl to a V8 and made famous as Maxwell Smarts car in the TV spoof "Get Smart"

| Yeah, I hear ya masalai I've done a bunch of those too. Right now I'm putting a 508 cid Caddy in my El Camino, with a 9-inch Ford rear, to hold up to the torque.Anyway, I was simply trying to save him some headaches in getting his boat in the water, by going the simple route. Wait a minute, there IS no simple route!! |

| Thx C D K Im gonna try out the jet drive then iv got the thing and it will clear many steering problems i guess there s alot of impelers to choose from if a need a bigger displacement of water i can just change the impeller |

| Hi masalai,ill definitly google that site but i also love aircraft and it seems to me that if something can fly u can multiply all the prices by 10 i know a small rotax for a microlight is 20 times the price of my twincam yea its heavy but for fishing and not flying thanx again |

| It is just the Chrysler/Mercedes engine for the little "smart44" or whatever the 1400cc diesel version is called - the engines wear made in America (US or Canada)???
