Is this a 40' belt? If not, skip all the above stuff and buy a new belt. Every manufacture makes a bad product every so often. Toss it in the drink and install a new one. Ask your parts man to look up the batch number and see how old this replacement it actually is too.

Location: Conn in summers , Ortona FL in winter , with big dock & room for O'nite stop .
"why haven't v belts be relegated to the past like points ignition"

Because they work , can be repaired easily , and replacement is a snap.

Since , as noted, belts die in storage a serpentine belt and new tensioner may not be worth installing after a year or two stored on board.

Points ignition will probably still work , after a lightning side strike , electronic will need replacement , and is seldom an on board spare.

For loads of cruisers , that get out of sight of the marina , the old stuff is still preferred.

So does this mean you'll be installing a "make and break" on your next project, with canvas sails and hemp standing rig? Or are you a real powerboat guy and a couple of decks of rowers will suffice?
