1975 Ford 302 starter problems?

I have a 1975 Apolo, with a Ford 302 and a Mercruiser outdrive. I just bought it from my brother out of Utah this summer, but he has not started it since he winterized it last winter. When I brought it back to Arizona and tried starting it nothing happened. I took the battery in and had it tested. It tested dead. I bought a new deep cycle Marine battery and put it in. When I tried starting it, it made one audible click and the post on the soliniod, where the cable from the battery hooks to turned red hot. The starter is in a very small, tight spot, between the block and the back seat. Can anyone give me any advise on what to check first, or what the problem might be?
