If it was a marine fuel pump that gas from the failed diaphragm would have be routed to the carb, right?

It was a 302. I don't know much about marinized vs land-based differences, except there must be greater fire/spark/explosion safe-guards.

on the ford engines there was a sight glass between the diaphrams in the pump so you could see fuel.
on later engines ( chevs) the pipe ran to the carb
