I probably should have figured this out by now, but-

How do I get a chart or other MS office object to display at the bottom of the post and not just show up as an attachment link? What ext's do this automatically?

Is there a good place to have BDN host the document and then use an internet link? I don't want to clutter the gallery with clippings. Trouble with copyrights in this regard?

A Microsoft office document (doc, xls, etc.) or pdf will show as a link which then launches the viewer application whether it's office, office viewer, open office, or acrobat reader or other pdf reader that the viewer has installed; it is not possible currently to have these display inline with a forum post here other than copying the text manually and posting as a post itself or having a link to the attached document. The easiest option is to simply have the pdf/doc as an attachment of a post that others can click to view.

Images (jpg, gif, etc.) will show as thumbnails inline. Or you can use tags to put a large image inline from either the attachment or an external photo hosting site. A chart or other document can be converted to a png/gif/jpg to display as an image inline.

If an article or document is copyrighted (and still under copyright and not in the public domain yet) and you have permission or rights to post it, it's helpful to include a short note "reproduced with permission" so there is no confusion later that you have permission before posting the full article or document.

[ ATTACH ]68848[ /ATTACH ] (click paperclip icon and you can insert attachment thumbnails inline with a post, linked to full images)

Half way there. How do I reference the attachment so the image appears imbedded in the text above?

1.) If you click the paperclip icon, you can insert an attachment thumbnail inline that is then linked to the full size image. This is useful for example if you have a post which involves several steps or descriptions of each image.
    or
2.) to force an image to appear full size, inline, you can also click the attachment yourself and copy and paste the url to the jpg or other image file into [ img ] tags.
