where to buy boat building supplies

Where does everyone buy their boat building supplies? I was wondering what options I had for marine ply, epoxy, glass, foam core ect... I did a google search, I was just wondering if someone knew of a good place off the beaten path.

A gallon of West resin is the same price at both sites, but both sites have different deals from time to time. I just drive over to JD, but they are 95% mail order. Interesting operation in there.

Now I don't buy alot of stuff, just resin in gallon quantities, sandpaper and hoses, etc, etc, so I am still curious about your question myself.

Do you buy your supplies from these guys Jack? Their web site doesn't have much technical info on their products. I was wondering if you've used any of their polyprop honeycomb core materials, glass and epoxies. I'm sourcing materials for our trawler project. Right now it looks like I might be heading south of the border.

i often use there honeycomb for swimdecks its a wonderfull material bends nicley with a heat gun and as strong as hell i layed up a 2 inch core with cloth on both sides and jumped up and down on it and iam a mere 315 pounds held up good to the fatman test, the best thing to do is phone them ask for Ray hes the owner, been around fibreglass for the last 40 years and he will tell you what you need to know, ive used his brand of epoxy and has the same properties as west system at a fraction of the price, i run a fibreglass department for a movie prodution company, and also have my own shop in toronto, and never had a proplem with them, got a question on anything tech and you will be talking to guys who spent years working with and not just selling , i always try and buy here in canada, another that i use is compasite canada in missauga, both these guys are good

Are you available next April to help me glass the hull on our 30' trawler?

I'm a little lost on terminology with fabrics. The designer is specifying fabrics designated as 1208 & 1708. http://boatbuildercentral.com/prodde...=E_bias_DB1208 Which are biaxial fabric & matt together. I can't seem to source these specific types of fabrics in Canada. I'll give the guys at fiberglass.com a dingle to see if they have/can get them. Pretty much everything else I'll need in tape and fabrics they have.

They're still nowhere close on the epoxy though. (40-45 gal) Conservatively I can save well over $1K by going south. As much as I like to support Cdn companies a grand in my pocket is a pretty big incentive to shop south of the border.

knottybuoyz ,i was just talking to ray and if you are buying large amounts of material he will discount, the prices on the web page are retail and if your going to be buying drums you will get trade prices

Hey Jack

Dumb question, please excuse my ignorance, but what's the difference between a "peel ply" and a "release fabric"? Just looking at that site again and trying to get a handle on how much material I'll need to bag the hull.
