What new !! Twaron ??

Twaron something new ?? anyone heard of it and had anything to do with it yet ??
comes in a couple of colors Black and gold ! can it be used in building hulls and decks

Seems like its used exstensively for ropes etc etc . couldnt find anyone using in in Construction of hulls in place of Kevlar . would could and should be used in conjunction with epoxy because of its supperior strength and streachability !

I read somewhere recently it is being used in sail manufacture, vaguely recall that it is an aramid fibre same as Kevlar with a different brand name. The article was about sails so didnt say if it is used for laminating of solid structures.

I believe its a fibre related to kevlar.

Ok I found the article - it is in Austrailian Sailing Magazine only last month
Kevlar is a Dupont tradename
Twaron is Teijin tradename

They are both members of the Aromatic Amides family (Aramids)
Presumably it could also be woven into a cloth for laminating as is Kevlar49 (perhaps it already is), but if the tradename is the only difference then there is nothing new going on here.

I just saw it and struck my interest so its just for crdage and ropes etc almost the same as Kevler just differant .as you say same but differant manufacturer ! Interesting !!

Twaron has been around for years, its not a new product, its just an aramid fiber made by a different company in Japan. As JRD has said, Kevlar is a Du Pont trade name for their aramid fiber.

It's been around since the late 80's to my knowledge and was Akzo Nobel's competitor to Kevlar.

It's now owned by Teijin but still made in Holland (IIRC)?.
I even think Teijin have changed the name and it's no longer marketed as Twaron?

It was certainly heavily advertised in the Yachting press 20 years ago.

Indeed, both Kevlar(r) and Twaron(r) are aramides, and are used in the same applications.

The Twaron dept of Akzo was bought by Teijin, which previously marketed the same product as "Technora" which also came in a black colour, to prevent the breakdown from UV.

In boating fibers, everything is a mismash of Kevlar, Twaron and Technora.

One of the main markets is cables, specifically optical fiber cables.

Bob , yes it has been around for many years ,and i am very well aware of that fact but .............high performance boat Co's that are using different composites in there build have been forced to make changes in there fabrics because of availabilty .
