transom replacement can anyone give me some advice on replacing a transom from the outside on a 17ft dory/wilson flyer... I think 2 3/4 inch marine ply covered/encaptulated in fibreglass 1 sheet epoxyed and glued to inside fibreglass skin, fill in sides, let dry then next sheet on same again, build up fibreglass to right level and sides, let dry, bolt transom to stringers and other supports then glue fibreglass sheet over mat to meet existing sheet around edges seal and fill then sand ready for painting please any advice would be extremly helpful Last edited by william1 : 03-27-2010 at 02:56 PM.

don't fill in the sides--leave a little space--you don't want to set up a hard spot with the sides--everything else sounds good.

William, I think I have enough of a colloquial language difference that I can't follow, e.g., I don't know what you mean by "sheet". I have replaced transoms before and MAY be able to offer input but I can't seem to grasp what you are saying. Maybe it is too early Sunday morning, maybe I am just slow...but could you draw what you are doing or explain further? By "hardspot", he means "stiff spot".

when i got this boat i think someone had try to replace the transom, anyway the way it had been built was ply to inside skin, cloth layer, then i think 5mm fibre glasss "sheet" stuck on and cloth wraped around edges and painted, i now have it bare just inside skin im a beginner to this type of thing not first boat but first time working on one cheers
