transom bung repair

hi all, not another transom question you say, well....Not really, sorta, but...

I have a 14 ft fibreglass runabout and the bottom bung on the transom, right at the apex of the v, has obviously been run aground and damaged. This has caused the bung to move and lose the seal around the scews and then start to rot.
Some one has repaired it before and cut through the glass and I now have a 1" high by 2.5" wide hole in the bottom of the v, cut back to good wood. The rest of the transom is fine, and I would like to avoid replacing the whole lot if possible. I cant get to the inside without cutting through the floor, but can do that if necessary.

I thought about epoxying a tapered ply plug and glassing it in, or....

Any thoughts appreciated

Cheers

Jason

Fill the whole mess with thickened epoxy and re-drill the original hole. All thru holes should be done this way with wooden cored boats to prevent rot at these points. You will probably have to cut an access hole in the floor to back the hole up for puttying. You should check this area for further rot inside the cavity anyways. You can hinge the access hole for further inspection purposes if you desire. To back the hole up, use a board covered with plastic that fits over the hole so you can peel it away from the cured epoxy.
