Tool for recessing foam?

I want to recess the foam on my build to leave space for laminate overlap. What is a good way to do so? I have tried sanding with an orbital but it seems slow and messy. would a electric plane work or be too aggresive? how have you gone about recessing foam?

Use the tool that is used for shaping surfboards. It is like a cheese grater

If you are gutsy a circular saw can be used,pulled sideways with the blade depth carefully set,You will need to guide from the back of the saw base ,straight edge screwed to the work,it does a clean job,practice on some scraps.

Use your wife's iron with the thermostat set for "cotton".
To avoid domestic violence when see sees what you have done, put a thin sheet of mylar or baking paper under the iron.

You think that helps? You haven't met my wife...

You're better off providing a new iron, but do not give it to her on mothers day, her birthday, or better still, under the Christmas tree...

Best thing I have used is 2 battens, which can be screwed into the foam to act as a guide, and a router, with as large a bit as you can find.

Afterwards smooth the edge with some sandpaper.

in case people find this thread in the future, a hot wire foam cutter would also work.
