scupper designs

I own a 19 ft center console with a self bailing deck. I keep the boat in the water for six months of the year. The problem I have is that the deck sits just below the waterline which prevents the scuppers in the transom to do their job. I have heard of below waterline scuppers and I am not familiar with the applications in which they are used. Does anyone have any experience with this type of scupper I would like to install them except it concerns me to cut holes in my boat below the waterline to plumb these in.
I plan to put two in the back of the boat on the deck near the existing scuppers thru the deck and then plumb them out thru the hull just below the waterline on each side.
Any ideas tips etc.

Thanks
RGG

If you have traditional "open" scuppers and your deck is below water level, then you don't have a self-bailing deck - you have a self filling one!
Do you mean that at rest, the boat sits with its transom low in the water so transom mounted scuppers are underwater? If so, then I'd look at replacing the existing scuppers with one-way types (they are readily available commercially) so that water can only drain out, not in. That keeps the sea out. As for rain water, you may have to think about installing a decent bilge pump - but then any properly equipped boat should have one anyway

Willallison is right and the the oneway scuppers work. but be careful that they are not partially fouled when you leave the boat. You dont want to return to a boat playing submarine. A question how old is this boat? was it oribinally self bailing? If it was You have a diferent problem that is definately going to get worse.

Will, at rest in my slip the bottom of the scupper flaps just touch the waterline. When the boat rocks slightly they go underwater and close causing the deck to begin to fill. Once this happens and the weight of water drops the back of the boat they dont open, more so depending upon which way the current flows. When it rains the condition gets worse and also when the water is choppier than normal. Under power they work fine.

Howard,
The boat is a 1994 19 ft Offshore CC with a 1992 Suzuki 115 outboard originally equipped with a self bailing deck.
I know that Suzuki outboards are a bit heavier than others but the boat is rated to 150 hp. I had this problem from the time I first started keeping the boat in the water. At first I thought it was water weight, but no water was getting in the bilge and I believe that not a lot water can be held in the hull to cause this, it is a modified v hull with a 11 1/2 deg. deadrise shallow draft. I believe it is a design flaw that is why I would like to install these other type scuppers
Thanks to both of you for your replies
Bob

try the tempo automatic drain plug. My father has used it in his boat for the last twekve years. basically the same conditions as your boat. It works and is removable no screws easy to check and clean. but keep clean as you would with all. ill tro to put the link. if link dont work go to westmarine and do a search.

captword ,

I appreciate your replies
Thanks
