Hello all,
I'm rebuilding a 1954 Palmer Scott utility 'J-Boat' (as the USACE called it) and will need to start looking for a new/rebuilt power plant for it in 9 months or so. I need something putting out between about 55 and 75 shp. Obvisously, several manufacturers make motors in that range. My problem is that I have no ability to assess relative dependability and performance for the various makes and models. Is the a publication that has done such? If I were looking for a car, I'd check out Consumer Reports, Consumer's Digest, Motor Week, Car and Driver..etc. There is a lot of info available on cars about things like cost per unit of use and such. Does such info exist for small marine diesels?
I hesitate to ask this because some people's relationship with their motors borders on religious. Some manufactureres are apparently nearly perfect(near diety) and others are satan incarnate. But, I'd be interested in hearing/reading personal accounts of histories, issues, problems, and successes.
Thanks,
