poly vs epoxy manufactured to repair

so are most boats manufactured using the poly resin or epoxy? if a switch roughly when was it?

and if epoxy and poly resins don't stick together well why are the majority of fiberglass repair kits poly and not epoxy?
wouldn't this cause problems?

Polyester is cheaper. For production boat building, epoxy is too expensive.

A repair done with polyester on a polyester hull will not be bonded as well as an epoxy repair done on a polyester hull.

There is a LOT of material out on the web about poly vs. epoxy. Sometimes you'll find conflicting posts, but on this subject, its pretty clear.

Can you make repairs with polyester resin? Yes. Especially if your dealing with small patches or cracks. But if you are putting in new stringers or a transom - epoxy is the way to go.

It seems like your waiting for someone to come along and tell you its OK to use polyester for a stringer replacement, so I will say it - go for it! But know the compromise you are making.

no I"m actually not looking for someone to tell me that, I'm just trying to soak up as much knowledge as possible here. just trying to get a better understanding of the differences and what's compatable with what.

thanks for the reply
