The Evildoer Is Here

Well after reading your true horror tales I feel for you. Now you can better understand my reluctance to use that AWLRUN product. I felt crappy about the whole situation but it had to happen that way.Remember me telling you how I thought it was gonna be a nightmare and how much work you were doing and how you expected things to go. I suppose you think a little different about my soundings in hindsight.
I absolutely agree that the cheapest price you got was downright outrageous I am assuming it was including the work you already completed.
But remember my health concerns for me it seems you are enlightened now.My neighbors would call the board of health on me had I painted the beast. Sometimes when you look at someone elses experience level and workaday life it may seem to be easy. But to make a boat or a car look like it came from a 1 billion dollar factory does not come at a price of 35 dollars an hour and that is my bitch every minute of my day.I hope your boat came out as you wanted.

River Rat

Hey Scott, How goes it.

actually all said and done, it was a great experience, only had one bad day, and that would not have happened to a guy with your knowledge of the equipment. I'm spraying right here in my yard with triple exhaust filters and no complaints from anyone, paint can't be smelled out side the booth. The boat looks great ( though not finished ) and I have learned a ton about awlgrip.

The only time I had any runs was, while trying to trouble shoot my equipment I had forgotten to turn down my material screw on the gun ( which I had open up trying to get paint out of the tip ). And the paint was looking so good that in the pursuit of flow ( to ward off evil orange peel demons ) I applied too much paint. Complete pilot error!!!

But after that learning experience, and with a little help from my friends ( thanks, Much, Jeff and the rest of you fine folks ). All has gone smoothly (slowly ) but sooo smooth..

So anyway thanks for touching base, it's great to hear from you. No hard feelings. Drop me a pm ( private message ) or call me.

Good friends are hard to come by.

Sincerely Grady

Mirror mirror on the Wall: test my Awl grip for O-Peel

Ya know, the hardest thing for someone to do is completely formulate a soultion to Orange peel when they are not on the site and moving your hand with the gun in it. Orange peel, it was said, is when the material is trying to move away from itself, well that is pretty much it, but it is trying to shrink as it dries and dries unevenly, But we could argue about that all night. Do, however, and it was recommended earlier, take, find, get the flattest surface you can find; a piece of glass works great, and run a few test coats on it; it must be on the day at the place in the same environmental conditions that will affect the boat. Testing 1,2,3 and you will have a great finish.
TIPS: keep your air pressure up: HVLP guns are not good for this type of finish they are notoriously low-pressure and tend to orange peel in theory.
TIPS: Keep your viscosity low...with HVLP you need very low viscosity. I used to shoot furniture
TIPS: do use the light as it was suggested...good tip.
If your air-pressure is right, your viscosity is right, and you know how to use the light behind you......you are going to get a great paint job.....but test first.

Wishing for a magic mirror

Thanks for your thoughts, I'm going to have to regroup in the spring, seeing that I just shoveled 16" of snow off my temp makeshift spraybooth.

I may try to upgrade my gun to a conventional unit. We'll see what santa brings (but the list is sooooooo long).

I think I'm on the right path, the finish on the coat right after the orange peely one was real smooth, flat and glossy. Unforunately it was also to heavy and did a little slide.

But the coat after that looked great (not perfect but great).

I still have tons of questions and lots of work ahead but do belive I will produce a finish I will be proud to say created.

Thanks

I use a devilbiss FLG2 it is a conventional spray gun, and you can get them at any NAPA autoparts dealer for $150. great gun, good price..

Right, you were getting it right, just not when you wanted to. That is what the mirror is all about. With the mirror, or glass--it just has to mimick the properties of the thing that you are spraying, i.e. boat hull, let's you "warm up" and tune your spray technique for the environmental and material propeties at the "moment" you spray.

If you want a great paint job: Paint. Don't walk up to the boat 4 months from now and just start shooting the material. You are going to be out of shape, your technique, recall, of what you did last week will fade. So, three weeks before you paint the boat the next time, paint something anything big and flat on the vertical....test your viscosity, thin your paint, lay it on heavy, thin, heavy. Point: under stand the characteristics and properties of how your material is going to act with you in the "mix".

Thanks
Read the above, then go buy some cheap Urethane from Home depot and practice......................
