Mold rental fee

Hi

I would like know if there is any way of calculating normal rental fee for boat mold.

The mold that I am going to rent is of a 29 feet high speed commercial fishing boat that is valued at $ 220.000- fully rigged with Volvo Penta 330hp.

The owner of the mold would supply the mold for the hull, wheelhouse and fuel tank.

My plan is to build 3-12 boats in 2 years and pay rent for each boat made.
He stopped producing boats from these molds 2 years ago.

It depends on many things. For example, the designer. A boat by Frers or Vandestat would be more expensive that one by an unknown designer. Also, the quality of the molds makes a huge difference. Consider also that molds have a maximum amount of hulls you can get before distortion becomes a problem. At that point they need to be faired again. The hull, deck and tank are maybe 15-20% of the total value of the boat so take that into consideration. He is providing you with molds for only a small portion of the boat.

The designer is a boat builder who has designed this boat based on 30 years experience in the business. The quality of the molds is poor, they are distorted since he has pulled 100 boats from them and they were built to pull 10 boats.


Can you give me any idea of normal rental fee for these molds ?

0. In the condition you are describing they are trash. You can usually get paid to take those away. The design may be worth something so you are better off using an existing boat, fair it and make a good mold.

Axel, There is no set price for renting a mould. The price would depend on how good and 'sellable' the design is. If they sell really well and are a very well known design obviously the moulds are going to be worth more.

As Gonzo correctly says if they are in poor condition they are not worth anything - this you will need to take in to consideration when deciding how much to pay as you will have alot of gelcoat repairs / finishing to do on each boat.

It appears that in this instance the moulds are owned by the designer which will benifit you as he will be including the royalty for his design in with the mould rental fee.

If you had purchased or rented a set of moulds from someone else there would be no guarantee that you had the right to produce them, and this you would normally track the original designer down and organise the fee which would typically be 1.5% of the retail price of each vessel produced.
