| Load carrying “Targa Bar” I wish to build a load carrying Bar/Beam “Targa” with a wing like cross section on the Duflex/E Glass/Epoxy sailing catamaran I am building. The Bar would be 3.5m from the keels to the centre of the upturned flattened U, the span 6.4m and be required to carry a load of 200kg. I have off cuts of Duflex in 13mm, 16mm and 25mm which I could use on edge to form a Spar or Spars for the “wing” using similar techniques as the large beams joining the hulls including the use of uni to create longitudinal strength. I would use a light composite for the skin. I have thought about stripping the bar using the 13mm, however this would use much more material and weigh more. Any suggestions/criticism would be most appreciated. |

| Hi, I may be able to refer you to someone who can give you a bit of help. I see you are using Duflex, did you purchase this from ATL or a third party?. The reason I ask this is that if it were purchased from ATL you would be able to talk to their Builder support person, he has helped us a lot with our Grainger G1220 kit that we purchased from them. I have spoken to him regarding the construction of a Targa bar for our cat, however at this point we are probably not going to bother with one. Email me at craighastie@bigpond.com if you purchased from ATL. We costed having a bar made at $5500. from a guy who built a carbon forebeam and rudders for us. |
