I am looking for a solid and light cored lay-up. What are some proven schedules? Core type, thickness, density, resin type?

How would this work: 1oz skin, 1708(+-45), 3/4" balsa core, 1808(0-90). E-Glass, Iso resin. The largest unsuported area is 18"x96".

    Thanks.

    Eric:

Lamination schedules, core specifications, etc. are a function of the length, beam, intended speed and type of service of the vessel. Also, the lamination schedule and corresponding scantlings for some vessels can vary greatly for each individual component of the vessel.

Someone on this site may be able to provide assistance if you specify the size and type of vessel or component that you intend to build.

Alternatively, you could check out David Gerr's "Elements of Boat Strength" and use the scantling rules he provides as a starting point. Regardless, special care (design consideration) needs to be given to the intended speed of the vessel...;)

The example you give is particularly bad because the fibers in the skins run in different directions.
