Ok,i pretty much agree totally with kaptin-jer except i use the 7" yellow foam roller covers, they have to be the very thin ones,1/8" i think, anything thicker holds way too much paint, you need to resist the urge to cover. The other thing is i use disposable foam brushes, buy a case of them and chuck em when they start to load up and swell. In our shop we mostly spray with Awlcraft but have done a few roll and tip jobs where appropriate, mostly on wood boats and i believe that Roll and tipping is actually faster when you are honest about it and take into account having to mask off everything and cover everything you dont want overspray on which pretty much means every other boat in the shop every time you prime as well as topcoat so we find ourselves covering boats and then uncovering to continue work the next day only to repeat the processover and over. The actual painting is not really slower either. In the last 2 weeks we have sprayed a 26 ft sailboat hull which took 4 hrs for 3 coats for 1 painter and a 55ft schooner which was roll and tipped which took 2 guys 2 hours per coat for 2 coats of dark green.Yes thats more man hours but for a much larger hull and much less time spent in preparation and no equipment to clean up and all the expensive paint went on the boat.

Welcome 'board Steve!!
I finally have a fellow believer. I have been fighting the lone fight to educate these guys for the past two years. I have used those rollers too with success, but most of the guys I talk to on this forum are first time painters. The 4" foam hot dog can be bought at H.D. and works great for about 20 min. I tell them to have one in their pocket to change on the fly. The Westwind you see in this thread, and others, is 38' painted with Flag Blue It took me 1.5 hours, alone, to apply one coat, and I think most of that time was climbing scaffolds.
Again, Nice to have you around. Read some of the earlier threads like the Awl grip Challenge, and you will be able to see where we are.

I'm on it now, just went back out and finished sanding that (*&^%&$&^ console, wiped down and repainted. Did this in an hour and it looks great. This is the console that I stood over for 6 hours till 2 am last week and it still ran.

What do you guys really think was going on early when all the crap was in the paint???? I am really doing nothing different cept not using 08 to clean prior and using better rags. I really think something was going on with the 08 and the top coat. Sort of also thinking this stuff is not formualated to be reduced less than round 20%, which I was under before. Remember I had dimples showing up in the roller pan and when I dropped some on clean foil.

I was inside a closed garage. Now I am outside under tarps and see very little trash in the paint.

Did the whole boat again today, sweet. Smoken hot out tho..

Cleaned the urethaner brush from yesterday but this morning looked clean but not as soft feeling. Got new.

BTW, the awlgrip tech rep told me to reduce to the consistancy of olive oil. That is very different that what Kapt said, water. I know who was right.

The ONLY problem you had was lint from the wrong type roller, and not thinning enough. Remember I told you that tipping was really easy? Now you are seeing what I ment.
Have fun.

Guys, really doing well on the paint, in fact bout rapping it up. I put down a 'final' coat and about 4 hours later reached up and smudged about a 50 cent piece size in the paint, it is more dirty hands than a dent in the paint. It was just barely tacky. Can I over reduce some paint and blend in a repair?? Please advise!

ya need to wait for it to cure for a couple days,,,tape off that small area,,then dob some paint on it,,,let that cure for a couple days,,(take tape off right after it flash's off) then you'll need to wet sand it and lightly buff A LTTLE,,since you wont be buffing a large area,,you'll need to buff for a minute,,,wait for 2 minutes,,buff for minute,,wait 2,,,and keep an eye on that area,,,,you CAN go to far and make that spot stand out like a free beer sign.,,,,thats what i do when spraying if i mess up ( there was once when i did,,hehe ) but ask Kapt. bout it,,,i dont think snailing is any different when it comes to repairing a spot.
