HELP needed on How to build new deck for Feeling 39!

HI , I have just joined the forum , so I'm sort of a forum virgin and definitely one on the subject of building new decks.
I have bought a sailing boat "Feeling 39" , with a burned out deck ( not to mention all the furniture etc .)
I can purchase a new bare deck from the manufacturer , for a "mere" 20,000 euros ( dollars), but that would be too easy would't it ) ( and expensive , So, I wondered if I could use my workshop and my carpenters/cabinet makers to make one ourselves .
Could anybody advise me on how to build a new deck that would look at least similar to the burned out one ? Any advise on methods, books , materials etc , will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tomek Madejski

Hard to imagine that just the deck is burned; there must also be structural damage below the deck unless the fire started on top and was extinguished before it reach the hull.

Did you make any pictures?

Re: new deck

Hi, The hull is fine , furniture inside was "surface treated " ), and the deck was removed in anticipation of a new one, then the owner "lost his hart" to continuing restoration, and as my name is MAD-ejski ))) I had no choice but to buy it . But seriously , could you advise me on what would be the best method of making one off deck for that particular boat, please? Any books that would "enlighten" me ? Thanks Tomek

A timber frame, glassed to the hull, then plywood, a few layers of fiberglass to make it all watertight.

I can see no other way. A one-off deck made in a mould seems a nightmare to me.

You could spend lots of time plastering and sanding the surface, but in the end it will still look ugly. I would buy an application gun and a carton of Sikaflex and make a teak deck instead, but the wood is terribly expensive. There is an alternative looking like teak but made from a polymer.

My first advice is to hire a knowledgeable person to inspect the boat. If a deck burned, there is very little possibility that there is no heat damage on the hull. Even if you get a whole new deck, if the edge of the hull is damaged, it will be a waste of your time and money. A survey is a cheap investment.

Donttthink to long about it just buy the deck from the manufacturer and refit it to the boat . To make a whole deck from nothing a a enormouse task . I have a friend in new zealand had a wooden boat and fitted a fibreglass deck to it . its a breeze and his boat looks brand new . The old wooden hull had rot and needed to be replanked in places . Has taken a long time but the glass deck helped enormously with just a join round the outside . and all the furnature glassed to the deck as per normal inside .
Buy the glass deck !!!

Making a deck that resembles the original will be a daunting project. These blister style deck and cabin structure decks are a fairing nightmare in 'glass and will test a wood worker's abilities beyond rational.

There are several ways to approach the process, though your cabinet maker buddies will quickly find out why they like cabinets and hate boats with this project.

First you have to decide what build method. A solid 'glass deck is pretty straight forward and you'll get results like the original. The same is true of a cored composite deck cap. A sheathed wood assembly will be easier for your cabinet maker friends, but since there will be very few straight lines, they'll soon learn new and likely inventive ways to curse you.

As Gonzo has mentioned, you need to have the hull surveyed. I've inspected many burned hulls over the years and only a few were salvageable. What may appear as superficial damage may hide major delamination issues. Only a professional is going to catch this sort of thing and not all of them are well versed in what to look for, so select a surveyor that has lots of insurance company experience.

As far as books, building a deck, regardless of build method, requires several sets of skills, not to mention should be engineered for the loads. The deck on a boat of this class, carries substantial hardware and resists huge loads, so don't take the deck design lightly.

The 20K for a new deck is sounding better all the time.

A new deck will not only cover the hull quicker but will also set the quality for you to match or better . Its clean and just like it was orginally So if you get to sell the boat you will probably get a good price for it .
