Heat insulating fabric/fiber

Hey Guys,

I am looking to construct a heat shield to keep heat from the headers away from the carburators. What material, carbon fibre, kevlar, fibreglass, etc would insulate heat the best? And where can I pick it up and what kind of epoxy should I use?

mineral wool or asbestos. Epoxy will soften/melt with heat, as will poly. Make a metal sandwich with a mineral wool/asbestos core and metal skin. Yes... it is still used, especially to insulate steam pipes in manufacturing plants.

Try not to use any cancerous insulators on a boat due to the vibration the engine generates and people 5' away . Go with a Aluminum carburator box. You could make your own. Bottom and 2 or 4 sides folded up from one piece or bottom and 2 or 4 sides welded up, top could be completly open. Bottom of box is between carb and manifold with 1 more gasket to seal any leaks.---------------------------add on. ---------------------Carbs? Just cut Aluminum plates that are held in place by the manifold bolts on each side. You may have to couple the plates with a threaded rod if they vibrate too much. Or weld a piece of 1/2" angle Aluminum diagonaly on each plate to stop vibration.

 

the concern here is radiant heat. If you make a two or three ply heat shield with spaces between bright aluminum plates and make the plates large enough the shield the carb. from the manifold the air between will serve as insulation enough.

 

I would rather not make it out of metal, possibly carbon fibre or kevlar if these are good heat insulators. Going for the oooh factor but I want to keep out as much heat as possible! I know that you can use the better carbon fibre in higher temperature applications than mine I just want to know if it will keep the heat out or if something similar like kevlar or even fibreglass with a high temp epoxy
