just kicking around the idea on building a flats/bayboat
after a mold is purchased what do you think the cost to
lay-up a 21'-23' no wood hull and using all composite materials

and after it is built how does one go about registering it in Florida

Registering is the easy part, just fill in the papers for a homebuilt and walk away with a title. The cost of the materials depends on your laminating schedule. The design will specify and it is not too difficult to add them all up. Also, include 10% waste and cleanup materials.

A very coarse estimate for the whole boat is that you'll spend about the cost of a similar new boat! You save the profit margin while you won't have volume purchasing or a large number of units to spread out costs. The fiberglass and resin cost depends on how many you build and what you want out of it.

    Welcome to the forum.

Florida is pretty easy to register a home built boat in. Call the Fish and Wild Life department and ask to have the boat inspected (yeah a cop will show up). He'll give you some paper work, which you'll send off to Tallahassee when completed. With the returned paper work, you'll go down to the local Tax Collectors office (where you pay for auto registrations and tags at) and they'll finish you up. They may or may not ask to see receipts and photos of the project, depending on if the clerk got laid the night before. Smile, look nice, tell her she has a pretty blouse and you're just trying to make you kids happy (with this boat thing), before they get the neighbor's daughter pregnant, etc., etc., etc.

    Hull + Deck + one-off molds, Cost: 55000 US$
By giving this number I hope many people say it is not correct and that they give the correct figure, which is what justasoon was wondering.

My flats build 22' was about 12k using a jig not a true mold. Corecell and Prime 20LV vac infused. I just got the FWC to sign off that it's clean and mine, but they didn't tell me to send it off to Talahassee, just said go to DMV … Im going Thursday, guess I will find out there.

Generally about twice what you think it will be.

When you meet with the Game Warden for inspection of homemade boat, BE SURE TO TAKE RECEIPTS FOR MATERIALS. A close friend of mine is a Lieutenant and when he does inspections he expects to see receipts to ensure that someone isn't trying to commit title fraud.

It varies a great deal around the country, here in Washington it's easy.

On the several I've built and registered its gone sort of like this.

Me "I want to title a home made boat"

Clerk "Do you have the receipts"

    Me "No"

Clerk "Fill out this form and give me a check for $XX.XX amount"

    Me "OK"

Clerk "Here's your registration, the title should come in the mail in about 2 weeks"

    Me "thank you"

The cost will be much higher than you think, it is much cheaper to buy a used, or even new hull, compared to making one yourself. But some people enjoy the process of building their own, which can be very rewarding.
