Construction question

Posted - Oct 15 2006 : 08:32:38
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I removed the lower half of the outer skin of my transom to fix the rot from leaking trim tabs. When I opened it up, I found not solid plywood, but, 4 inch squares of plywood, all butted together. Why do they do this? Isn't solid plywood stronger? How should it be replaced? My initial plan was to coat plywood w/ epoxy, then epoxy it in. Followed by epoxying the skin back on.Thanks.

it shouldnt be in the transom, the squares are a poor mans coring. The theory is the resin between the squares provides strength.

I talked with a guy with a small boat shop that makes his soles like this but leaves a space between the squares rather than butting them together. His theory was to control/contain rot if any occured to small areas.
