Tja I'm assuming that your only having the old bottom paint removed to expose the original gelcoat. If this is the case, after the old paint is removed sand the gelcoat with 80 grit sand paper remove dust residue and coat with 4 to 5 coats of interlux 2001 epoxy moisture barrior as per instructions then apply 2 coats of interlux VC17 Teflon based antifouling. VC17 works well on both sail and power boats,Tom.

My preference, and I have no scientific data to back it up with, is to use a few coats of neat, unadulterated epoxy resin before proceeding with barrier/primer coats, ideally soaked into a couple of layers of glass cloth. Always seemed to me that in order to make a barrier-coat paint, you start out with a perfectly good epoxy, then you mix in fillers, pigments, thixotropic agents, solvents and God knows what else. Makes me doubtful that you've really improved the epoxy when you're all done. Is there an expert around who can shed some light on the situation? Yokebutt.

Tja If some of the original gel came off with the removal of the old bottom paint. Grind out the damaged areas as needed then either fill these spots with glass and resin if the damage is deep enough, grind to contour then finish imperfections with thicked epoxy resin and sand to final finish. If the ereas aren't in need of glass then fill with thicked epoxy resin and sand to finish. There are fillers made specificly to thicken epoxy which works well as a filler. Hope this helps, Tom.

This is probably superflous advice, but do make sure the bottom is dried out before sealing it up. Yokebutt.

| Of course, hanging three layers of 10oz cloth overhead using WEST system with fast hardener like we used to do is no fun, we'd tune in a good Mexican radio-station with oompa-oompa music and turn the volume up to 11.....Barring that, I'd at least put a couple of layers of resin on the surface before going to the paint. | Tja If you don't want to make up your own filler from epoxy and microbalons then buy a premium polyester body filler and then coat with epoxy moisture barrior as I noted in a eairler post. I've used this system for years with good results, Tom |
