| when taping,,use "fine line" for all your tape edges then masking tape for your plastic. do all your "hand sanding" first, all the radius's and right against your tape,,but dont hit the tape,, your line will be choppy, then do your air sanding. when doing another color, or nonskid after,, re-tape, then sand up to the tape line again, and get as close to the tape as possible so that your "line" doesnt turn into a "bump" line

| Hand Job Much, tell me more about hand sanding first. For some strange reason I've been doing all of my DA-ing first then long boarding then hand blocking and finally running down the radius' with a hand piece. Mastcolin had also mentioned that I should be sure to do all hand sanding first then my air sanding last. I naturally the little circles the DA makes would be harder to hide (or fill ) than the cross-hatch pattern left by opposing 45 degree long board scratches Thanks

| I think the reason for sanding first with the boards has to do with why you sand with boards to begin with, which is to get the surface flat and true. And since rougher grit paper cuts 'straighter', you generally use rougher paper on a long board, either 40 or 80 or maybe 120 at finest. Then you can smooth out the rough scratches from board sanding using a DA and finer grit, from 180-320, depending on your next step. If your next step is topcoat you go finer. If the next step is primer, you go rougher. DA's DO NOT cut very straight and true for the most part, so all the fairing and truing is done with long boards, air files, and sometimes a 'mud hog', followed by smoothing with a DA. |

| starting from the very first time you decide to paint to the end.do your inside radius with hand sanding, in some of these places you have NO choice on your "direction" of sanding, then do you outside radius with a 18" block, in 45 degree angles BOTH ways, the back of your block is what your using to fair the front of your block, then do your long boarding, when you come to a spot that really unfair, you can use an air file,if most the boat is unfair and the longboarding is hurtin, then ya can use the BIGGEST DA ya can get ya hands on, i use an 8". and if real bad,( we made a home made 12"). if your boat is fair, then you can use an 6"da.after priming you do same steps,, inside hand, outside board, then da. the da will clean up your "edges" of hand and boarding,that way the only hand sanding seen is that inside and very "tip" of ya radius, which is the hardest place to see any small imperfection because of light and angle. i use my da for my outside radius after the priming,,but STRESS ya really shouldnt unless ya been doing it fer years. another thing, dont do the circles with ya hand sanding in the radius or on the outside radius, then circles are easier to see in them spots.and DONT no matter WHAT push on an "edge" of the da,when ya working into the radius, thats another reason to do ya hand sanding first,,and after handing, then da'n you'll see that you can get really close with ya da to the center of the inside radius's. you shouldnt need any longboarding after your primer is on, jus a small one for that outside radius. some boats at the bow may need to be air filed just because of the angle and all are different. we alwaYs had to air file the morris yachts bows because of that,,,a da would put small flat spots instead of fairing hehe,,that only took me once to learn, specially after we had to "high build" it then sand that rock hard ca-ca ![]()

| Much, I hate to disagree, but a 12" board is not a long board. A long board is 36" to 48". If you sand with a 12" board you will be missing half the areas that need faring. The shortest "long" board I use is 18", and only when I can't get help. You don't push a board straight, but on an angle. Anyway you look at it My long boarding days ended with this boat!! --Still didn't get it as good as I would like, but Jim and I will be the only ones to notice---so he says. |

| kapt.,,,,i was talking bout boarding the radius with a short board,hehehehe we had a LONG board of 12 foot that took 2 of us to use,,hahaha,,,,long board aint long till 36" and i think either i wrote wrong or you read wrong,,,i was talking jus radiuses for short board,,,JUST THE RADIUS,,,lol hehehee,,your confusing me now,,,maybe i need more sleep i'll re-read what i wrote and get back to ya in a few,,,,(after meds) heh and maybe a few "fumes" ![]() grady,,what did i type? hahahaha ![]()

| Well Much, you should know enough by now to never doubt yourself. I the way I read it, It's only mentions 8" or 12" anything when talking about DA's. So I'm going to have to side with you on this one.(even though your a little hard to follow sometimes when you haven't naped). Jerr, keep up the go work making Much an honest man. although my board is only 18" long it seems to do what I need it to. The only section that showed any signs of needing fairing was the transom.

| Hay Jim, Just wanted to see you get real confused. I know that you know that I know you knew what a long board is. (need the meds yet?) We talked about punishing ourselves with them in a previous thread. You don't hate boats. You just hate working on them. I work on them because I don't have to, it's my therapy from a week driving a computer. Any time you try to make money off of a hobby it stops being fun. Got to go - missing a good hockey game. |

| Jim, That Apogee is a pretty boat, but wouldn't you feel even better about it if you did all that work for yourself on your own boat? You really need to get hold of an $800.00 45 footer and start restoring it for yourself. You need something to do out there in the desert. Then haul it to the coast and take the family sailing. Maybe even live aboard |

| i hate sailing man,,,LOVE sail boats,,,and if my ole lady would, i would live on a sail boat tied in a slip ![]() i like RIDING in power boats ( real ones not these "pretty" boats down here) but HATE that its mostly ABOVE the water line,,,like a freakin bobber waitin ta sink,,hehe ![]() and i love fishing boats over 65',,doing the REAL fishing. but now that im half gimp im afraid it only be a dream but man,,,,,,what a dream![]()
